Title: 2010 Internet2 IDEA Awards
Hi All;

I am passing this along to draw attention to the Internet2 IDEA awards.  The award is given annually to recognize achievement in research and education.  Feel free to nominate projects that exemplify this call, or pass this along to interested colleagues.  Awards (and a track session describing the winning project) will be given at the Internet2 Spring Meeting in Washington DC.   Don't hesitate to mail me with any questions.

Thanks;

-jason

IDEA Awards Overview

Nominations are now open for the 2010 Internet2 Driving Exemplary Applications (IDEA) Award! Award winners are establishing new frontiers in the application of networking technology, and are considered role models for the entire research and education networking community.

Open to established or new applications, the IDEA Award was established in 2006 to recognize and encourage innovative applications of advanced network technology that have made—or promise to make—the most significant impact on the research and education community. The award also presents an important opportunity for the Internet2 community to recognize members who are changing the way we think about the possibilities and uses of advanced networking.

Winner Recognition

Winners will be announced at the Spring 2010 Internet2 Member Meeting, April 26-28, in Arlington, Virginia. Winners will be given a netcast track session at the meeting. A letter of recognition from Internet2 leadership and the AMSAC Council will also be sent to the winning project institutions. In addition to receiving publicity at the meeting, winners will also be recognized in handouts, press releases, the Internet2 website, newsletters, and other materials.

Submission Requirements

IDEA Award submissions include description and impact statements for the project, and references (to URLs and publications) that can assist the judges in getting an understanding of the application and the effect it has had on research and education. Please be prepared to include information about collaborators and funding sources as well.

As the IDEA Awards are primarily subjective, it is also important that the judges hear from the application users. We ask that reference users submit testimonials about the application. The references should speak to the impact of the application in advancing their teaching, learning, reesarch or other scholarly activities.

Entries may be submitted by an individual affiliated with an Internet2 member, a Sponsored Educational Group Participant, or a Sponsored Participant.

Detailed guidelines and submission criteria are available at www.internet2.edu/idea/
The submission deadline is February 28, 2010.

Judging Criteria

The judging committee is made up of representatives from the various Internet2 councils and Working Groups and is chaired by Tom Knab, member of the Internet2 Applications, Middleware, and Services Council and CIO of the College of Arts and Sciences at Case Western Reserve University. Judges use the following criteria in selecting award winners:

  • Innovation in advanced network applications for research, teaching, learning and collaboration
  • Magnitude of the positive impact of the application for its (current) users
  • Technical merit of the application
  • Breadth of impact, as indicated by current user base and likelihood of broader adoption by its full natural community of potential users

Submissions take advantage of the unique capabilities of the Internet2 network infrastructure—that is they are notfully usable on the commercial Internet at the time of their implementation. Strong consideration is given to the demonstrable impact of the application on its current users, the extent of the current user population, and the potential for widespread adoption by and usefulness to others with similar needs who have access to advanced R&E networks around the world.
