--------

SIP.edu Conference Call June 9, 2005

*Attendees*
Dennis Baron, MIT
Armin Brunner, ETH Zurich
Ed Guy, Pulver
Jeff Kuure, Internet2
Matt Runion, University of Oklahoma
Mark Spencer, Indiana University
Chris Trown, University of Oregon
Mike Van Norman, UCLA
Carlos Vicente, University of Oregon
Doug Walston, Cisco
Garrett Yoshimi, University of Hawaii
Dave Zimmerman, Berkeley

*Discussion*
Today's call begins with a discussion of the ENUM trial set up by Ed
Guy. A few schools are registered already, including Berkeley, MIT,
and the University of Oregon, with others coming soon. A SIP redirect
server is in place, allowing ENUM lookups and translating SIP INVITEs
for users without ENUM support.

Dennis mentions that MIT is currently not supporting ENUM due to the
older Pingtel software in use. He is using Ed's redirect server which
is working fine. All MIT number blocks are in the ENUM space, so MIT
numbers should resolve.

Dave Zimmerman says that Berkeley's ENUM is working as well; they are
now dealing with allowing NAPTR entries into the database. Carlos
Vicente called today using ENUM, and while the the lookup worked
properly, the call was not connected. This will be fixed soon to allow
both incoming and outgoing calls. He has begun advertising the
approximately 20 Berkeley numbers that are reachable by SIP.

Armin Brunner mentions ETH Zurich's ENUM implementation, and discusses
integration with the Pulver initiative. Mike Van Norman of UCLA
mentions that he recently contacted Ed Guy about registering as well.

Following the ENUM discussion, Dennis mentions recent additions to the
SIP.edu cookbook. There is now a Cisco gateway recipe, thanks to Steve
Blair from the University of Pennsylvania as well as several
proofreaders. Currently the 2650 is covered in the cookbook. An MIT
research group recently brought up SER using remote party ID (RPID),
and has drafted a cookbook section. Dennis requests others who are
familiar with SER to help review.

A brief conversation about RPID follows. Ed mentions that RPID is also
in Blue Lava, and Dennis mentions that Yale was also interested in
RPID. Discussion also touches on RPID authentication, dealing with
untrusted numbers, spoofing PSTN and VoIP numbers, and flagging
numbers as untrusted or anonymous.

Dennis reminds participants that there will be a SIP workshop at next
month's Joint Techs in Vancouver.

Armin asks about a recent SIP.edu presentation in Poland. Dennis
explained that he gave a 45 minute presentation from his from his home
to the TERENA TF-VVC working group meeting
(http://www.terena.nl/tech/task-forces/tf-vvc/meeting-4/) in Poznan,
Poland. He discussed SIP basics and call flow, and touched on ETH
Zurich's implementation. The University of Valencia in Spain has also
recently become involved with SIP, and gave a presentation to an
educational network group. Dennis mentioned that it was hard to
interpret audience interest over the video connection.

The next call will be June 23rd, with discussion from Ben and Dennis
on "SIP.edu by the Numbers".
