This note is a followup to an announcement sent to this list in early December. Down below, we've included the notes that we've distributed to the people who joined the conference call.

This note is intended to serve as a status update summarizing the discussions from the first call, and to describe the next steps that the group will be taking. There will be another call on Jan 3rd; further discussion will take place on the shibboleth-dev email list (instructions included down below).

The discussions are likely to cover the use of OpenID and authentication methods from the various social networks, as well as the use of oAuth.

We'd like to invite anyone (and any sites) who is interested in these topics to join the next conference call, and participate in the email discussions.

This is probably the last note to this list on this topic; thanks for your patience.

Steve and Keith

-------- Original Message --------

This note is a followup to the Dec 13th conference call discussing use
cases and requirements related to the use of OpenID authentication in
the Higher Ed/Research space. This note is going to the people who
attended that call, and some other people who have expressed interest in
this topic. (Unfortunately, we weren't able to decipher a couple of the
names that were mentioned during the roll call. If we mis-guessed a
name, and you weren't on this call, sorry for the SPAM. ) A separate
note will be sent to several relevant email lists to announce that a
call took place, and the next steps for this effort.

Most of the call was taken up with exploring various use cases, and
trying to extract requirements. Based on that discussion, we've added a
new page to the wiki, trying to describe "generic use cases"; it can be
seen and edited at:

https://spaces.internet2.edu/display/OpenID/GenericUseCases

We'd strongly encourage people to look at that page, and add to it and
improve it. We're sure that the descriptions need additional "sharpening".

The group also agreed to begin holding bi-weekly conference calls in
order to identify Requirements and assign Action Items to various
Working Groups. The next call is scheduled for Monday January 3rd at 12
noon EST; calls will be held every two weeks after that until we
complete our Charter. We don't expect this to take very many calls.
Logistics information is included at the end of this message.

We also agreed to use the existing shibboleth-dev email list for
discussion during this initial phase, until we complete the charter.
Information about the list can be found here, including a Subscribe button:

https://lists.internet2.edu/sympa/info/shibboleth-dev

Lastly, we also identified several Action Items. People volunteered for
some of them, but the notes are unfortunately incomplete on this topic.

-- describe the attribute information shared by the various cloud/social
services (Roland, perhaps?)

-- describe the current implementations, and potential ones

-- from the use cases, develop a requirements list

-- develop a list of advanced requirements (Scott)

-- describe mod_auth_any (Kim Goldov)

Please feel free to continue the discussion on the email list. The next
call is in early january; the agenda will be to move the discussion
toward specific requirements.

Enjoy the holiday break! And talk to you in january!

Steve and Keith
