Chad's original message doesn't suggest scheme, and 
https://spaces.internet2.edu/display/SHIB2/IdPSimplifyConfig (bottom of the 
page) specifies the following ldap related properties for the properties file 
based "lite" config:
* LDAP URL (hostname, port, base DN)
* LDAP credentials (principal DN and password) optional

With the data connector's ldapUrl being:
ldapURL="ldap://${ldap.hostname}:${ldap.port}/{ldap.basedn}";

So no option for ldaps://.
