Chad checked in a number of changes this morning. After he stopped, I 
downloaded the latest version from svn and built it. I ran this on 
stc-test11, using a standard apache/tomcat config, and it worked just fine.

I then downloaded it to stc-test12 and built it. This machine uses a 
standalone tomcat config (using container managed security). On the 
first run, I tried to use the FileBackedHTTPMetadataProvider, 
downloading the metadata from stc-test11 (same metadata file that was 
causing problems yesterday). This resulted in an NPE; the log file and 
relying-party.xml file that I used can be found at 
http://stc-test12.cis.brown.edu/test1/ .

On stc-test12, I then scp'ed the metadata over to this machine, and 
changed the relying-party file metadata section to point to the (now) 
local metadata files. This started up properly, and, when I moved over 
to my browser, it worked correctly (using tomcat container managed 
security).

Tomorrow, I'll use another VM to try the new version with JAAS authN.
