I wonder if
"cross-organization SSO" wouldn't be better. I'm trying to think of simple terms
that mean the same thing but are easier to digest for "mere mortals" (or muggles
for you Potter fans) as opposed to us gearheads.

All of the content you listed is very
valuable, yes. A key phrase
that's missing, I think, is "cross-domain
SSO", which distinguishes
Shibboleth from many (most?) other systems.
This is probably what you
mean when you say "federated authentication" but
I'm not sure the
latter gets the point across as
well.
