Some background fodder, for one of the items on today's conf call agenda.....
Some quick thoughts, after last monday's conversation, and a separate conversation with George/SteveO. Also, take a look at drupal.org -- I'm rather impressed (except for the downloads tab)
this list is intended as a set of of "quick fix" items, somewhat separate from the longer term fix, which I don't think we understand yet.... but the situation is so dire, that I think we need to do some things quickly....
comments and feedback welcome!
1) convey the impression Shib is real and professional quality; web site should reflect this...
2) top level page gets slimmed down --
- a one or two sentence description of what shib does (eg http://www.rubyonrails.com/ , http://drupal.org/ )
- some text, targeted at CIOs and tech directors, providing a general intro to shib (what it is, value it provides, what makes it unique, what's required to use it, when do we mentioned Federations?). Perhaps taken from the brochure http://shibboleth.internet2.edu/shibboleth-brochure01.html
-- a "to learn more" link, to a new re-ordered documentation page...
- a small frame with the most recent news items... (relationship of this to shibbing news)
-- link to a demo
3) a radically simpler Nav bar -- (support (see drupal), downloads, contribute (see drupal), documentation, forum/email archives, contact)
4) re-use the existing downloads page http://shibboleth.internet2.edu/release/shib-latest.html
(but if I just glance at this page, I have trouble extracting its high level structure)
5) archive much of what's on the documentation page: http://shibboleth.internet2.edu/shibboleth-documents.html
-- address many of the items in this recent directive -- "Everyone will visit that site and get a general understanding of the components, protocols, and features of that approach to federated authentication and authorization."
-- a set of "next steps"....
6) encourage people to sign up for shibboleth-announce
7) develop an FAQ for the general audience
Everyone will visit that site and get a general understanding of the components, protocols, and features of that approach to federated authentication and authorization.
