I downloaded the MySQL SRPM, made a few changes to the SPEC 
in order to get it to compile with gcc3, and had to patch a few
Makefiles in order to get it to use g++3 (instead of gcc) to link..

But I now have re-built MySQL RPMS with gcc3 and they appear to work.
So, progress :)

I've started writing a standalone package (shib-mysql-ccache)
to implement the cache..  I'll see how quickly I can get it
coded.
