Hi All,
Please see this message from Chris Robb about decommissioning the no-longer-active legacy network. Note that we don’t anticipate any disruptions to any services that you
consume from the Internet2 Network. See below for details and let us know what questions you have. Thanks.
Linda
Dear
Internet2 Member:
As
you know, Internet2 has been working hard over the past two years to transition network services over to the new NGI platform. I’m happy to report that transition is approaching completion and we are starting to focus on decommissioning the no-longer-active
legacy network. We’re very excited to enter this final stage of transition and want to make you aware of what it might look like from your perspective.
It’s
important to note that we don’t anticipate any disruptions to any services you consume from the Internet2 Network.
Equipment
is being removed only when all community-facing services have been transitioned away from that hardware and an extensive verification process has been completed. You shouldn’t notice anything other than changes to our NOC web pages and tools that document
and monitor the legacy network equipment.
We
anticipate this process will play out incrementally through January, 2022, with the bulk of the legacy removal completing by the end of 2021. The removal will generally be incremental and focused on specific points-of-presence or major paths in the network.
In some cases, we may opt to turn down network-wide assets or monitoring to better facilitate the removal process. Again, this will only affect legacy services that are no longer being used as all production services have been transitioned to the NGI platform.
This
stage represents the final step in the largest network transition in Internet2’s history. We are looking forward to shifting our attention in early 2022 toward taking advantage of some of the enhancements the new platform makes available to our community.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions you might have.
-Chris
