Hi,

Just to close the loop, you are correct the right thing to do is follow the instructions on http://docs.perfsonar.net/multi_ma_backups.html to enable JMX on localhost so the nodetool will work. For security reasons JMX is disabled by default. Per your suggestion we have added a note on the migration page about this.

Thanks,
Andy

Antoine--

The previous response from Soh Suzuki was actually correct - cassandra was up & running (I could see it listening in 3 different TCP ports, just not port 7199 which 'nodetool' wants).  The real issue seems to be that the cassandra environment is not (was not?) configured to enable 'nodetool' by default, so I had to follow the "preparing your environment" steps on the page: http://docs.perfsonar.net/multi_ma_backups.html. After that, the instructions on the "Migration from CentOS 6 to CentOS 7" page (http://docs.perfsonar.net/install_migrate_centos7.html) work.

Could you please ask the documentation team to update the "Migrate" page either adding the prerequisite steps, or add a link to the "backing-up and restoring data" section of the "Managing Measurement Archive Data" page?

(and no, we never have done backups of our perfsonar node(s) - the config & historical data has just not been deemed sufficiently valuable to bother).

Thanks,

Hello James,

Can you check cassandra is actually running before launching the migrate script?  This can be done with a simple `service cassandra status` or by checking the list of running processes.

If not, try to restart it (`service cassandra restart`) and run the script again.

If cassandra is not able to start, it would be good to have a look at the log files in /var/log/cassandra to see what are the errors.

Let us know how it goes,

Antoine.

I'm trying to get rid of an old CentOS 6 / PS 4.0.2 setup & get it up to the supported CentOS 7 / PS 4.1.x configuration...but the very first step is failing, the backup of the old system.

I've googled around & found one reference to this problem back in the PS 4.0-RC1 timeframe -- but no answer.

When I run "/usr/lib/perfsonar/scripts/ps-migrate-backup.sh --data ~/ps-backup.tgz", I get an error on snapshotting the cassandra database:

# /usr/lib/perfsonar/scripts/ps-migrate-backup.sh --data ~/ps-backup.tgz
Backing-up users...[SUCCESS]
Backing-up groups...[SUCCESS]
Backing-up passwords...[SUCCESS]
Backing-up perfsonar configuration...[SUCCESS]
Backing-up bwctl-server configuration...[SUCCESS]
Backing-up owamp-server configuration...[SUCCESS]
Backing-up NTP configuration...[SUCCESS]
Backing-up cassandra data for esmond...Unable to snapshot cassandra database

If I run the first "nodetool" comand from the backup script, I get:
# nodetool clearsnapshot esmond -t esmond_snapshot
Failed to connect to '127.0.0.1:7199': Connection refused (Connection refused)
#

This is not entirely surprising, since there is no process listening on port 7199 (on any interface - 127.0.0.1, 0.0.0.0, or the node's actual IP address).

The backup script _does_ work with the '--data' flag omitted.

So...why is cassandra (apparently) not configured the way the toolkit expects it to be, and how can I fix it?

Thanks,
  --Jim

P.S. node is running CentOS 6 + PS 4.0.2 - but was originally installed as a NetInstall back in the PS 3.0.x days, I think (updated continually via yum-cron since then).
