I did come closer this this ;-) With the update to 3.4 the MySQL service
doesn't seem to get installed & configured any more!

I have to admit, we do not install from the iso images, but rather do a

"yum install perl-perfSONAR_PS-Toolkit"

As there is no rpm dependency on mysql-server in it, MySQL is not
installed. OK, I did that on my own, but there's no script that
configures the service later on (create datebases, establish 'perfsonar'
user, etc.) - /opt/perfsonar_ps/toolkit/scripts/nptoolkit-configure.py
does not have an option for that.

Is there an updated documentation somewhere, which describes the "yum
install"-setup?
https://twiki.opensciencegrid.org/bin/view/Documentation/InstallUpdatePS
is not suitable here :-(

Thanks, that helped in finding my real problems!
