Greetings;

FYI for those not on the Internet2/NTAC performance working group.  For those that want to be - email address sign up here: https://lists.internet2.edu/sympa/subrequest/performance-wg.  Ken Miller (current char) is CCed in case any of the conversation on this list needs to be taken back to the other side.  For those that are Internet2 members (or those that are not, but support projects that may traverse the Internet2 network somewhere in the workflow), its important you get your voice heard if you support, or disagree with, the proposed course of action.

At the risk of biasing (and anyone who has ever heard a talk of mine, I am sure you would never guess I have strong opinions), the historical party line of the R&E community has been toward open and friction free for many types of services, including measurement.  This is a key aspect that sets the community apart from the commercial providers, and a very valuable distinction that should be triumphed loudly and frequently.  As of the last directory sweep I examined there are more than 1000 perfSONAR nodes around the world.  A random sampling could suggest they are open to testing without human intervention (an important distinction from the historic testing methods, and the essentially crux of perfSONAR); no matter if you are originating in Lawrence Kansas or Tokyo Japan.

Thanks;

All,

We’re getting pretty close to having our hosts complete for the new pS infrastructure on I2. I’m trying to figure out what sort of expectations we should set for provisioning. IE: When a site asks/opens a ticket to set up a regular scheduled test what kind of expectations should we set (and hold ourselves accountable to) for how long this should take?

Maybe something like “by the time the site requests, with the default expectation being 2 weeks”?
