I haven't tried it out so far. It is only available for C, C#, and Java.
But we also ran into performance problems with our Perl implementation. We 
are 
trying to compensate that at the moment. Using VTD-XML is not the preferred 
way for us, because we would have to create the Perl bindings on our own. Not 
really a great problem in Perl, but we are first trying out other options.
For proof of concept tests, testing in Java (or C or C#) should be much 
easier.
