Dear Colleagues,

After a significant delay, I have finally the pleasure to announce the
first version 0.2 Release Candidate of the perfSONAR monitoring probe.

"psping" is a small program to test various services of the perfSONAR
infrastructure. It uses EchoRequest messages to do this task, waiting
for the appropriate EchoResponse from the service tested. Thus, it can
measure both availability and response times.

As mentioned, this is indeed a second version already. The first one was
ready more than a month ago, but it was not announced widely, because
the code was still quite rough. Yet, in controlled conditions it was
performing pretty well, and thus it was possible to integrate it in the
SmokePing deployment at IPP-BAS/ISTF/BREN. This integration was possible
thanks to the probe module for SmokePing that was developed as well.

There are still only few services that respond to the probe; hopefully
their numbers will increase soon. If you'd like to test the probe, you
can download it from the following location:

If you're impatient, you might decide to also check the binaries, but
they are not guaranteed to work everywhere:

Please refer to the included in the distribution documentation on how to
compile and use the probe. Don't forget that this is still a release
candidate, so bugs and glitches are to be expected.

your bug reports, comments, and suggestions to

to check the TODO file too, in order to know what is already planned for
the future versions.

P.S. One thing that didn't make it in the TODO file is that we're
preparing a SVN for psping (and for PerfsonarUI eventually), so you'll
be able to check the latest code from there at any time.
