Although until now the next perfSONAR release has been referred to as perfSONAR-1.1, the Release Management team wants to change its version number to 2.0.

 

The rules that we are adopting to control versioning in bundle releases are:

 

- 1.0, 1.1, … major bundle releases where each individual service is backwards compatible in terms of interface/protocol;
- 1.0.1, 1.1.1, 1.2.1, … - bug fixes for major bundle releases;

- 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 – when there are schema changes in individual services, in a non-backwards compatible way, or it is decided that the bundle release version needs to grow because of a major feature or change in an
underlying/packaged service;

 

These versioning rules apply only to bundle releases, while the pointed factors that decide a bumping up of version (schema, interoperability and major functionality changes) are linked with the underlying/packaged
services.

These rules do help the Release Management team on controlling the versions supported to users, and also the client developers of perfSONAR services, giving them the information about interoperability and schema changes.

 

In this perfSONAR bundle release, the service RRD-MA has some non-backwards compatible schema changes. That's the reason why the Release Management team does not want to open a precedent.Therefore, the next release, the one in the making right now, will be referred to as perfSONAR-2.0.

 

The appropriate changes will be made on the Wiki pages.
