Hi,
There are 2 main types of requests that SNMP MP can answer..MetadataKeyRequest and SetupDataRequest
MetadataKeyRequest is for discovering the capabilities of the MP by talking to the MP directly. For example, you can discover which routers are available, which OIDs are available, etc. We call such information as metdata.
This request also returns 'keys'. You can use these 'Keys' to retrieve measurement data from the SNMP MP. You can also make requests for data without using keys (see section below). Keys are meant to be opaque. We plan to encrypt them in the future. Using keys in request for data improves server efficiency.
SetupdataRequest is the second type of request. In fact it has two sub-types:
sub-type 1: this can do data retrieval when no keys are provided inside the request message
sub-type 2: this can do data retrieval when keys are provided inside the request message.
There aren't big differences between these two sub-types - just the presence or absence of the key.
Note: SNMP MP is currently capable of providing data for one request at a time. Bulk requests are planned for the future.
The diagram below is a UML sequence diagram for metadatakey request. Look for other emails where you can find similar UML for other types of requests.
Feel free to ask me any questions that you might have.
Regards,
Loukik
