We have been made aware of a problem that is the result of an update to the EPEL repository’s jq that conflicts with the one in ours and is being selected for install by YUM.  The version in EPEL lacks part of a perfSONAR-developed patch the corrects a problem on jq related to its handling of large numbers.  This in turn causes a library critical to pScheduler to load properly and induces failures in a large number of its components.

Systems affected are new CentOS builds and updates from releases prior to 4.2.0 done within the last 48-72 hours, which appears to be when EPEL’s update took place.  Debian is not affected.

As of today at 20:30 EDT, a patched version that will be preferred over EPEL’s has been placed in the perfSONAR repository.

How to check if your system is affected by this problem:

  • Run ‘pscheduler ping localhost’.
  • If the program dies with an ImportError related to the symbol jv_integer_is_large (last line of the error), your system is affected  and will need to be updated.

To update an affected system:

  • Run ‘yum makecache’.
  • Run ‘yum -y update’.
  • Reboot.

Please let us know if you encounter further problems with affected systems.
