Composer Nico Muhly is one of the most successful composers of his generation. At the age of 30 he has already composed two complete operas, one of which was a co-commission from the Metropolitan Opera and English National Opera, the other a co-commission by Opera Company of Philadelphia, Gotham Chamber Opera and Music Theater Group.
His opera Dark Sisters, with librettist Stephen Karam and director Rebecca Taichman, will have its Philadelphia premiere in June 2012. After its world premiere with Gotham Chamber Opera in November 2011, it was hailed as “An intriguing new opera conducted with flair by Neal Goren” and that “Muhly and Karam seem to have succeeded where many new operas fail.” - Mike Silverman, The Associated Press. James Jordan with The New York Post commented that “Gotham Chamber Opera and Music-Theatre Group give this work as superb a production as any new opera might hope for.”
Composition students from colleges and universities will have the opportunity to speak with Mr. Muhly about Dark Sisters, writing opera and his compositional process, his career and musical influences, and more.
This program is brought to you in partnership with The Opera Company of Philadelphia.
