hi michael, anne

researchers here at RIT are interested in conducting research into the technical issues of distributed musical performances.
i have seen several demos of this over the last few years at I2 meetings. a professor, a masters student, potential for a new
class, external funding and involvement with professional musicians are all anticipated.

could you update me on who is working in this are and who would be good contacts to make to consult, coordinate and
possibly partner with? i think the core technical issue is maintaining quality and dealing with differential latencies from the
distributed sites. of course, there are other issues both technical, psychoacoustical, and social.

we are starting with the Access Grid as an initial technology to get some baseline data.

any updates, leads, or suggestions would be appreciated to get started.

thanks,

-gurcharan

We in the Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering Technology (ECTET) program within the College of Applied Science and Technology (CAST) as part of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) are researching the feasibility, logistics and implementation of live recording sessions carried and delivered over IP networks.  The recording engineers and musicians would be in disparate locations anywhere in the world where they have access the commodity or Internet 2.  It is the expectation that the commodity internet would not be the best choice for this application at this point.  Research would begin using Internet 2.
