- Agenda Bash
- No agenda bashing was noted
Update on peering and I2PX
- TikTok traffic – saw drop to zero – TikTok withdrew routes. Now seeing small amount of traffic in last 24 hours. They do not seem to be using US-based infrastructure to deliver traffic. Suspect that they
will be shifting back depending on political landscape.
- Limelight and Edgecast – owned by edgio, who filed for bankruptcy. Traffic has been decreasing and now is virtually zero. BGP Peers are still up but likely running on autopilot.
- Have seen increase in Akamai traffic; Jeff is working on capacity augments.
- Have been working on capacity augments for Amazon to prepare for removal from R&E table. Jeff: looking to treat Amazon as two separate networks – Western region and Eastern. Jeff would first remove Amazon
Seattle peer from R&E tables, asked for feedback. No concerns raised from the SIG with several thumbs up. Timeframe: next 1-2 weeks.
Network Weather Update – Trends and Coming Events
- Semester start: traffic has ramped up as normal.
- Looking at analysis of Netflix live TV streaming traffic. No good data from campuses yet to understand how traffic is flowing. Jeff is looking into additional peering with Netflix as this is a shift from
usual cached Netflix traffic.
Internet2 Network Updates
- Making progress on Halsey – new interconnect POP to replace 111 8th POP, hopefully significant progress this week. Dealing with fiber issues between there and 32 AoA. Hoping to get a 400G link
up by end of week.
- JoAnne: 2nd POP that is 400G only – no Waveservers. Going to two 8-slot optical chassis architecture.
- Coherent optics conversion wherever possible to eliminate the need for Waveservers. Will be working with Jeff to determine
- JoAnne looking for 400G coherent in-net peer for proof of concept. Reach out to JoAnne on email or Slack if interested.
Campus border route policy best practices
- Jeff did workshop at TechX – hopefully will be offered again in future. Workshop went well – Jeff took different approach – gave case studies of route policy gone bad, which seemed to help with interest
and understanding. 30ish people in attendance, range from novices to advanced level.
- Dave F still working on a presentation as time allows.
Community peering needs and issues
- Should we make any attempt (with reduction of CDNs) to peer with smaller CDNs so that content providers have other options besides Akamai and Fastly. Discussion. Jeff will investigate and is looking for
input/suggestions.
- Does I2 have anyone to communicate with in content world (eg, customers of Akamai and Fastly)? To determine what would be longer-term thought on where they think they will be sourcing content. I2: Not
currently but could ask around. Capacity seems to be going offline and not returning. Could be watching/keeping an eye on what ASes are originating content.
Any other business?
- Semester starts mostly smooth. Once campus had to do cert change on eduroam and had the usual challenges.
- Jeff and JoAnne will be at NANOG in two weeks in Atlanta, hopefully without winter weather.
