Peering and Routing:

Internet2 has conned Dan Schmiedt (Clemson) and me (Oregon State) into being co-chairs of this working group.  We are both excited to help find ways to work together as a group to do good and useful things for this community. Our next meeting is scheduled for 4 pm (EST) on November 27th. Given the change in group leadership as well as some of the exciting things happening at Internet2, we want to take the opportunity to take a fresh look at the role of the Peering and Routing WG and what we might be able to accomplish together. Some topics we’re planning to touch on at the next meeting include:

-              Group charge: What is our purpose and deliverables? How will we benefit the community and Internet2? Can we codify this

-              Community needs: What are the communities underlying assumptions and expectations for Internet2’s infrastructure?

-              Group deliverables: Can we develop principles or ideas for the layer-2 and layer-3 infrastructure that could help guide Internet2’s development of their next generation network? At a minimum we should be able to codify the community needs and expectations. Can we anticipate future needs that might help guide Internet2’s future work?

-              Community leadership: The Security WG has been focused on several routing related projects such as MANRS and RPKI. Both NIST and the NSF have shown significant interest and support for these efforts. How can we take a leadership role in moving the community forward in these initiatives? Are there areas where Internet2 could help advance solutions for current and future challenges in routing design and infrastructure (i.e., AS path validation, etc)?

Put simply, what does the community want from Internet2 and how can we (as a community) help Internet2 to move forward?

Of course, we can also expect some of our efforts to be focused by the report from the Routing Services Futures (correct name?) group as well as external pressures such as Google’s adoption of the IRR for filtering. I hope to see many of you next week!

Tony Brock
