While reviewing the list of BGP communities supported by Internet2 in order
to do some traffic engineering (6500[1-3]:<peerASN>) for AS path prepending,
I noticed that, quite understandably, these are currently limited to
two-octet ASNs. RFC 8092, BGP Large Communities, was published earlier this
year to handle tagging with four-octet ASNs. Two questions come to mind:
1) Do (the collective) we need to develop a schema for using large
communities and
2) Does the code currently running on the Internet2 routers support RFC 8092?
If the answer to 1) is 'yes' and the answer to 2) is 'no', when might we
expect that capability in the backbone?
I understand this might not happen immediately because of some other projects
going on.
