Hi All,
Are you interested in hearing the latest on the Next Generation Infrastructure (NGI) Project? Here is an excellent opportunity for you...
Internet2 has created a virtual event called TechEXtras Kickoff to be held on October 6 and 7, 2020 to engage with technical staff and to
continue to convene the community. On the first day of the event (October 6), in
addition to the special keynote sessions described below, you will hear an overview of Next Generation Infrastructure (NGI) progress and plans when Rob Vietzke presents A
new Internet2 Network with new capabilities is arriving in your neighborhood in 2021. The
second day (October 7th) will focus on the technical details of the NGI Project (see below for the schedule). You are invited to attend both days. Registration is
required.
Keep reading for more details about the event. We look forward to seeing you and your staff next week. Please let me know what questions
you have. Thanks.
Regards,
Linda
More details about the event:
October 6, 2020
With a special focus on enabling scientific research, these sessions and follow-on presentations will provide our community with timely
discussions around supporting institutional research missions. The day also includes a brief welcome by Internet2 President and CEO Howard Pfeffer,
and some exciting updates on the Internet2 Next Generation Infrastructure (NGI) project.
The first keynote address will feature Andrea Norris, Director, Center for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer at the National Institutes of Health, and Michael
Tartakovsky, Chief Information Officer and Director, Office of the Cyber Infrastructure and Computational Biology, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Their keynote will focus on research challenges in the era of the pandemic and will be
followed by a panel discussion between some of the primary stakeholders facing these challenges.
The second keynote address will feature a talk and Q&A with leadership from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and its N-Wave network. From
the Campus to the Cloud: Delivering High-Speed, Scalable Network Capabilities to Enable NOAA Science will focus on N-Wave’s evolution and expansion to serve all NOAA missions—from the surface of the sun to the depths of the ocean floor.
Rob Vietzke will then present A
new Internet2 Network with new capabilities is arriving in your neighborhood in 2021. As Internet2 and community collaborators
move to implement Internet2’s fifth generation network with delivery of the new network scheduled for summer, 2021, hear a major update about Internet2’s Next Generation Infrastructure. We will provide an update on the new capabilities for research, cloud
and other advanced networking services, share details on how Internet2 and Internet2 members can benefit from the new packet platform partner and talk about the roadmap for services including cloud connect. We will also highlight our work with regional networks
to introduce a new platform approach to share the new capabilities. This session will be an overview for community leaders and also for those attending the Advanced Networking sessions on Wednesday, October 7.
October 7, 2020
“Morning Welcome” 10:30-10:45 ET
Rob Vietzke will set the stage for the day's discussions.
“A View of the New Internet2 Network Infrastructure from a Node Near You” 10:45 – 12:15 ET
This session will focus on the architectural approach and decisions made to roll out the new network infrastructure. Starting from the capabilities in nodes
near you, we will share details of the capabilities, topology and engineering of the new nodes and backbone. We will also discuss the new performance monitoring capabilities, a new secure management network and how the upgrade contributes to a greener environment.
Break and Grab your Lunch 12:15 – 12:30 ET
Lunch Q&A Discussion with Internet2’s new Packet Platform Partner 12:30-1:00 ET
Hear from the awardee of Internet2’s packet platform RFP about their solution and opportunities for Internet2 members to collaborate with Internet2 and the
new partner in new programs.
“Automating the NGI Network” 1:00-1:45 ET
The rapid deployment of the new infrastructure, and the services it will deliver, will depend on a solid layer of automation tools and custom code to enable
the software capabilities the community has asked for. Hear from the Internet2 software and automation team about the automation architecture, decisions about traffic engineering tools, code being developed and the roadmap for new services like prefix approval,
cloud connect and zero touch provisioning.
Break 1:45-2:00 ET
“Deploying and Transitioning to the NGI Network” 2:00-2:55 ET
With the selection of the packet platform partner, a rapid deployment and transition program will now get underway. This session will share the internals
of the project plan for all parts of the network and software and will begin a conversation about transition approaches for connectors, the backbone and peers. Detailed technical overviews of plans will be shared.
“Community Discussion and Next Steps” 2:55-3:15
Join with the area leaders of the NGI project and advisory group chairs James Deaton and Jim Stewart for a review of the day.
