actually I've just found out that my configure line was indeed correct...

See:

# readelf -d ndt-3.7.0/src/web100clt | grep RPATH
 0x000000000000000f (RPATH)              Library rpath:
[/usr/local/lib:/my/funny/dir]

The reason for the bizarre strace I was seeing (checking in /my/funny/dir only
for libpthreads) was probably due to the fact that on the build host the rpath
I had specified doesn't exist, so on the second library lookup it is
automatically excluded. Everything worked fine once I copied the generated
binary on the host I will be running it from...
