Looks like "/sbin/mkinitrd" is in the "mkinitrd" RPM.  Check to see if that is installed and install it if not.

Really doesn't seem likely, but you do have a /lib/modules directory, don't you and you can create directories and files within it too, correct?  Not something read-only or a symlink to something that doesn't exist somewhere in that path?

It would probably be helpful if you did "make V=1 install".
