I understood it to mean that there was a version incompatibility and that  
if I had a client that matched the server it would work, but maybe that's  
reading too much into it.

I would expect an error more like "The server  
ndt.iupui.mlab1.lga01.measuremnet-lab.org:7123 does not appear to be an NDT  
server."
