Consent-informed Attribute Release (CAR): Fixing the Attribute Crisis

“Free the Attributes!” “No - Minimize Identity Exposure!”

How about “Let the individual decide?”

The value of federation is slowly eroded each time an institutional identity provider does not release requested attributes to service providers. IdP and federation operators find themselves caught between cries of "free the attributes!" from their relying parties and calls to "minimize identity exposure" by those concerned with data privacy and institutional risk. One potential solution: allow the individual to decide.

The Scalable Consent project has developed a framework, and working code, in support of effective and informed end-user consent and attribute release at Internet scale. Duke University has helped to develop and is now implementing CAR — Consent-informed Attribute Release — which shows users (in easily understood terminology) the attributes about to be released and allowing them to make a decision. It also provides powerful management tools for users and the institution for setting policies on who, when, and which consent options are presented.

Join us for this IAM Online for a discussion of the issues and a demonstration of the CAR solution.
