<> Board of Trustees Update
The Internet2 Board of Trustees met via conference call on October 13th. In
attendance: Molly Broad, University of North Carolina (chair); Robert
Berdahl, University of California, Berkeley; Larry Faulkner, University of
Texas, Austin; David Lassner, Chair Applications Strategy Council; Dick
Liebhaber, Chair, Industry Strategy Council; Diana Natalicio, University of
Texas El Paso; Bonnie Neas, Chair Networking Planning and Policy Council;
Doug Van Houweling, President & CEO, Internet2; and Chuck Vest,
Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Discussions included strategic
planning, strategic directions for national optical networking, financial
and membership activities, and the activities of the Internet2 Advisory
Councils.  The following resolutions were approved: the proposed FY2004
budget was accepted as presented; selection of the firm of Ernst and Young
to perform the FY2003 Audit, and the Board Audit Committee charter as edited

<> Internet2 at EDUCAUSE 2003
EDUCAUSE 2003, taking place November 4-7 in Anaheim, California, will
include a presentation by Ken Klingenstein, Director the Internet2
Middleware Initiative and recipient of the 2003 EDUCAUSE Leadership in
Information Technologies Award, a session on the EDUCAUSE/Internet2 Computer
& Network Security Task Force, as well as an Internet2 organizational

<> Internet2 at SC2003
In addition to its annual contribution to the networking of SCinet,
Internet2 will support the sessions of SC Global, capturing for later
viewing three days of distributed events. Interactive sessions include:
James Oliverio on artistic collaborative technologies; Bridging the Digital
Divide with a panel from a variety of Pueblo and Apache cultural centers;
Natalia Maltsev on Bioinformatics and future workspaces; and more Internet2
will also have a booth at SC2003 featuring the University of Tennessee LoCI
project, PlanetLab, and the E2E piPES framework (End-to-End Performance

<> International Update
+ Poland Launches New PIONIER National Optical Network
At an event on October 20th in Poznan commemorating 10 years of national
research networking in Poland, "PIONIER" the new Polish optical internet was
launched. The Polish research and education networking community has built
out (some portions on its own, some in partnership with telecommunication
companies) currently 2648km of fiber connecting 16 metropolitan area
networks (MANs) serving universities, research centers and other
institutions. By 2004/2005 the PIONIER network expects to have 5200km of
fiber connecting 21 MANs. The PIONIER network runs 10 Gigabit Ethernet over
the current fiber footprint and is in the process of upgrading to a 10Gbps
connection to the GEANT pan-European backbone network. Poland joins other
countries in Europe such as the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Switzerland in
building and operating its own optical network facility in support of
high-performance research and education networking. Presentations about the

+ New International Partners in Latin America, Middle East and Oceania
Internet2 is very pleased to announce three new partnerships that will
provide a basis for Internet2 and the following organizations to work
together toward establishing high-performance Internet connectivity between
their respective communities with the goal of enabling researchers to
collaborate internationally.

On October 14th, Internet2 signed a Memorandum of Understanding with CLARA
(Cooperación Latino-Americana de Redes Avanzadas), an organization comprised
of national advanced networks from more than 16 countries throughout Latin
America. As of today, several CLARA members (CUDI-Mexico, RNP-Brazil,
RETINA-Argentina, REUNA-Chile, REACCIUN-2-Venezuela) already have direct
connections to Internet2 networks in the United States, including
Internet2's Abilene network. Some of these connections are supported by the
AMPATH project and others are supported via connections with California's
CENIC network and the University of Texas at El Paso. As the RedCLARA
backbone network is developed, CLARA anticipates that more than 700
universities and research centers will be connected to it. RedCLARA, being
developed with the support of the European ALICE Project, will create the
first intra-regional infrastructure for research and education in Latin
America and the Caribbean.

In New Zealand, the NGI (Next Generation Internet)-NZ Society Incorporated
was established recently to provide a national and international high-speed
network in New Zealand. Internet2 and NGI-NZ has signed a Memorandum of

The Shibboleth pilot organizations have evolved into the Shibboleth Academic
Special Interest Group (SIG) and continue to discuss implementation issues
and to assist in planning the future direction of Shibboleth.

+ 3rd Annual PKI R&D Workshop, Call for Papers
This workshop to be held in Gaithersburg, MD, April 12-14th, 2004 will
consider the full range of public key technology used for security
decisions. It will be jointly sponsored by NIH, NIST, and Internet2, in
cooperation with USENIX and OASIS. PKI supports a variety of functionalities
including authentication, authorization, identity (syndication, federation
and aggregation) and trust. The Call for Papers is now available:

+ Directories
A high level architecture has been adopted as a starting point for
discussions that will produce a detailed design for the components of a
group management toolset. The architecture provides a common framework for
the Grouper toolset, a project of the Internet2 MACE-Dir working group
(formerly known as SAGE), and a form of Stanford's Authority Manager to be
developed and made available by Stanford University. The common framework
and design process will help ensure that the resulting tools complement and
articulate with each other.

+ Campus Architectural Middleware Planning (CAMP) Directory Workshop
February 3-6, 2004, Tempe, Arizona
Modeled after the Enterprise Directory Implementation Roadmap the workshop
reviews directory implementation steps in a highly focused forum for
learning and discussion.  The program is tailored to two key campus IT
roles--the CIO and the directory architect. CIOs will focus on management
and policy issues and directory architects will focus on implementation and
technology.

+  Pre-Workshop Tutorial on Identity Management
An introductory workshop for institutions planning to implement an identity
management project will be offered on February 3, preceding the CAMP
Directory Workshop.  Attendees will learn about enterprise directories, a
critical piece in identity management infrastructures, and leave with enough
knowledge to attend the CAMP Directory Workshop. Learn more at:

Beyond implementing a directory service, campuses are looking at the bigger
picture of how identity management can address their security concerns. For

+  New Advisory Group:  Middleware End-To-End Diagnostics (MW-E2ED)
A new Internet2 Advisory Group, Middleware End-To-End Diagnostics, has been
formed under NMI-EDIT to gather feature requirements for a distributed
diagnostic platform that is application independent.  Chaired by Chas
DiFatta of Carnegie Mellon University, the MW-E2ED effort will focus on
engaging with specific high impact NMI-EDIT and GRIDS initiatives to help
foster their adoption, development and deployment efforts, will survey
research activities and standards efforts, and will focus on delivering a
simple but useful diagnostic and performance analysis toolset.

+ "Rise of the Collaborative Tools" November 13th with Ken Klingenstein at
1:00 p.m. EST (UTC –5)
Join Ken Klingenstein, Director of the Internet2 Middleware Initiative and
recipient of winner of the 2003 EDUCAUSE Award for Leadership in Information
Technologies, and host Steve Worona on November 13 for this EDUCAUSE Live!
online seminar. Dr. Klingenstein will review the requirements for
collaborative applications and discuss the status of the more promising
tools and how campuses can prepare to use them.

+ E2E piPEs (End-to-End Performance Improvement Performance Environment
System)
The team is preparing for a major demonstration at SC2003 of the Abilene
Measurement Infrastructure, the Abilene Observatory, and E2E piPEs. The
demonstration will include live performance data and analysis from the
Abilene backbone and show the web services interface to that data.  The data
will include performance testing to the core of ITEC administrative domains
(NC-State, OSU, and UCSD), as well.

+ Bandwidth Estimation (BEst) Workshop
A Bandwidth Estimation (BEst) Workshop, scheduled for December 9-10 at the
San Diego Supercomputer Center, aims to discuss recent advancements in this
field, resolve arguments (e.g., regarding the terminology and definition of
bandwidth metrics, acceptable degree of intrusiveness in active
measurements, evaluation of existing measurement tools), and to identify
open problems that require further research. The workshop is sponsored by
CAIDA, IMRG, and, the DOE Office of Science. More information can be found

+ Campus Network Infrastructure Guide (CNIg)
An outcome of the Fall Member Meeting was that several case studies are
under discussion and development: the California State University system,
Caltech, the University of Oregon, Oregon State University, and Northwestern
University.  The wireless infrastructure at Indiana University is a topic

+ National Library of Medicine (NLM) Pilot Study
The Final Report was submitted to NLM on October 30, 2003; a session,
reporting the results, was held at the Fall Member Meeting.

+ Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Working Group
Several sessions at the Fall Member Meeting involved this working group –
the regular meeting, which included presentations on LionShare and JXTA; a
Campus Bandwidth Management Working Group meeting (a group focused on one
particular topic related to P2P); and a coordination meeting between the two

<> Applications Update
+ Fall Member Meeting Demos
The Fall Member Meeting demos were very well attended and provided visitors
with a first hand look at some of the exciting advanced network applications
work going on throughout the Internet2 member community. MIT Haystack
Observatory demonstrated how advanced networks and a technique called
‘e-VLBI’ have the potential to revolutionize the practice of
Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) in radio astronomy. According to
first-time demoer David Lapsley, Research Engineer at MIT Haystack
Observatory, “I think the demonstration did a great job of raising awareness
of e-VLBI within the networking and funding communities.” Milton Chen, of
Stanford University, demoed the Video Wall, a collaborative effort of more
than a dozen Internet2 member institutions. Video Wall displayed more than
40 high-quality video streams, including live feeds originating from Asia,
Europe, and North and South America. According to Chen, “I met many future
collaborators for the next version of the Video Wall. Overall, demonstrating
my application at the Internet2 Member Meeting was extremely valuable.”
Several other Internet2 university, corporate, and affiliate members also
showcased their innovative applications of advanced network technology
during the Fall Member Meeting demos.

+ Rich Presence Experiment
Nearly 100 Fall Member Meeting attendees participated in an experimental
demonstration of WiFi voice and rich presence organized by the
newly-chartered Internet2 Presence and Integrated Communications (PIC)
Working Group. This was a first-light demonstration of new personal
communications technologies that integrate voice, video, instant messaging,
and presence; and that leverage a SIP call routing infrastructure that
allows each user to be reached at a one-stop electronic address equivalent
to email address. Participants from Columbia University, the University of
Pennsylvania, Yale University, and Indiana University partnered with HP
labs, Wave Three Software, Ford, and iptel.org (an independent group at the
Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS in Berlin) to plan and provide this demo at the
Fall Member Meeting. The PIC Working Group is planning to return to future
Internet2 events and gradually mature these new services into meeting
infrastructure (like WiFi) that we all now take for granted. Watch for a
repeat of this experiment at the Joint Techs Workshop in Hawaii and the
Spring 2004 Internet2 Member Meeting in Arlington, Virginia.

+ New Videoconferencing Subscribers
Internet2 welcomes our first eight subscribers to the H.323 multipoint
videoconferencing service of the Internet2 Commons, which launched this
September: Northwestern University, NEES (Network for Earthquake Engineering
Simulation), Boston College, Merit Network (Michigan's Education Network),
CIC (Committee on Institutional Cooperation), The Ohio State University, the
University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the University of Washington, Seattle.

+ Megaconference V Call for Presentations
Megaconference organizers are seeking proposals for presentations at
Megaconference V, scheduled for 10 December 2003. The Megaconference is an
annual event that is the world's largest Internet videoconference. The theme
for this year is "Sustaining Global Communities through Videoconferencing."
Some examples of presentation topics include collaborative teaching and
research among multiple groups or individuals who are geographically remote
from one another. All presentations are made from the presenters' location
using H.323 videoconferencing technology, preferably at 768 K and H.263. If

+ Joint Internet2/NLM Tutorials and Demos at RSNA
Internet2, the National Library of Medicine (NLM), and the Metropolitan
Research and Education Network  (MREN) are collaborating to present a series
of tutorials and demonstrations of advanced networking technology and its
future application in the healthcare arena. These tutorials and demos will
be featured at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North
America (RSNA), which will take place in Chicago from 29 November to 5
December 2003. Around 30,000 radiologists, healthcare administrators,
technologists and scientists, plus another 30,000 imaging and information
system vendors from all over the world, are expected to attend RSNA 2003
making it one of the world's largest medical meetings.

+ New York Named SEGP of the Month
NYSERNet's history includes a succession of firsts:

o First statewide regional IP network in the nation was deployed in 1987.
o First T1 backbone deployed in 1989

Through the NYSERNet SEGP, NYSERNet brings educational and research
organizations within New York together into an aggregation for the purpose
of connecting to each other, as well as to external networks. The
establishment of the SEGP allows members of the aggregation to send and
receive traffic over both the NYSERNet and the Abilene networks. For more
