Title: Spring 2011 Internet2 Member Meeting Highlights

Internet2 Member Update

Internet2 Community to Gather at Spring 2011 Internet2 Member Meeting

The Spring 2011 Internet2 Member Meeting is less than a week away! When our community gathers for our annual Spring meeting, we will explore together the key elements of "The Path Forward" - the meeting's theme, and the message Internet2 CEO Dave Lambert shared at last year's Fall Member Meeting. Thanks to the outstanding job done by the Program Committee, this year’s meeting will feature nearly 60 track sessions; 80 BoF, SIG and Working Group Meetings; 13 poster sessions; and all of the opportunities to connect with the friends and colleagues who this meeting brings together.

General Sessions

First General Session, Tuesday, April 19, 10:30-11:45AM: Internet2 welcomes Leslie Daigle, Chief Internet Technology Officer at the Internet Society (ISOC) as the meeting's First General Session speaker. Ms. Daigle will present on the very critical and timely subject of global IPv6 adoption and the associated challenges that ISOC is helping to address.

Second General Session, Wednesday, April 20, 10:30-11:45AM: The second General Session welcomes the Honorable Mignon Clyburn, Commissioner, Federal Communications Commission as our speaker. Commissioner Clyburn will speak about the importance of expanding advanced broadband to community anchor institutions nationwide and the policies that are needed to help our country achieve this most important goal.

The General Sessions will also feature the 2011 Rose Award announcements. Full program information is available online.

Open Governance Meetings

Internet2's Advisory Council meetings are open to all attendees, providing an opportunity to see the councils in action. AOAC, AMSAC, ERAC, and RAC welcome your interest and participation. These open meetings take place on Wednesday April 20 from 4:30-5:30 PM. For additional detail and meeting locations, please see the meeting program.

Internet2 Industry Members Sponsor Events and Activities

Internet2 gratefully acknowledges the sponsors of the Spring 2011 Internet2 Member Meeting. Internet2 would like to thank ADVA Optical Networking, Ciena, Cisco, Fujitsu Network Communications, Infinera, Juniper Networks, Level3 Communications, Qwest, and Verizon Business, for their generous sponsorship of this meeting, and Polycom, and SKC for providing supporting equipment. The generous support of these sponsors has helped to make this Member Meeting possible!

New to Internet2 or Attending Your First Member Meeting?

If your organization has just joined Internet2, or this is your first Internet2 Member Meeting, there are a number of sessions and activities that you may find helpful in getting to know our community, and learning about Internet2.

  • The Internet2 Network Services and Operations Update on Monday, April 18, will provide an overview of recent activities with the Internet2 Network and the services Internet2 has deployed to meet the networking needs of the regionals, the campuses and their researchers.
  • The R&D Update, also on Monday, will offer a look into the activities pursued by Internet2's Working Groups, SIGs and BoFs, grant activity, research with the community, and upcoming projects.
  • The Internet2 Business Meeting on Tuesday, April 19, provides information for members on the financial and operational aspects of Internet2.

Be sure to stop by the Poster Sessions, and feel free to join one of the numerous BoF, SIG and Working Group meetings held throughout the week. Finally, be sure to attend the Welcome Reception on Tuesday evening for informal visiting with friends and colleagues. See the online agenda for additional details on the program.

Industry Membership Activities

Industry members are invited to the Member Meeting Industry Member Forum. The forum meets twice a year to share information with fellow Industry Members at the Spring and Fall Member Meetings. This event is an excellent opportunity to connect with industry leaders and to interact with Internet2 staff. The Industry Member Forum takes place on Tuesday, April 19 at 7:00 AM. Industry members are critical participants in Member Meeting Poster Sessions and the Program Committee, in addition to presenting and serving on panels in a wide variety of track sessions. For more information, please contact .

International Community Activities

There are many sessions for Member Meeting attendees that focus on the international networking community, including the Internet2 International Strategy and Program/Partner Updates session on Monday, April 18, the NRENs and the Future of Mobility session on Tuesday, April 19, and the African Regional Research Networks session on Wednesday, April 20.

Additionally, Internet2 is delighted to partner with the World Bank to host the emerging NREN Special Interest Group meetings at the World Bank headquarters in Washington, DC., on Thursday, April 21. This unique opportunity to explore intersecting interests will include updates from emerging NRENs in South Asia, Africa, Middle East, and Caribbean regions, and World Bank programs relevant to these interests. All are welcome. Information and registration (required for security) details are available online.

U.S. UCAN at the Spring Member Meeting

Participants at the Spring 2011 Internet2 Member Meeting will have plenty of opportunities to learn the latest about U.S. UCAN. "Discover U.S. UCAN," on Monday, April 18, will provide a brief overview and discussion. A BoF group will hear about the latest work of U.S. UCAN's Task Force on Community Anchor Network Economic Models on Tuesday, April 19, and a BTOP Awardees Workshop on Wednesday, April 20 will address the importance of sharing best practices and identifying challenges.

Call for Program Committee Participation

The Internet2 Member Meeting provides many opportunities for the exchange of information about new and on-going work in the member community. These opportunities are created by the work of the Internet2 Member Meeting Program Committee, which has responsibility for creating the main program at each meeting. The Program Committee is charged with developing the Call for Session Proposals and the subsequent evaluation and selection of member meeting track sessions. In an effort to have the Program Committee composition mirror the Internet2 Advisory Councils, we are recruiting new members to join continuing members. More information about the Call for Participation and the roles of the Program Committee is available online.
