As a part of our Virtual Worlds Education Roundtable meeting in Second Life on 2nd July, Enrique Cachafeiro (8-bit in Second Life) will discuss his experiences of designing and developing learning spaces in OpenSim for teaching biology to his high school students.

These are the details of his session:

Title: Practical Use of Virtual Worlds as a Learning Space in a Public High School

Abstract: Virtual worlds afford many benefits to the learning process. At the high school level, students often become disenchanted with the learning process and fail to engage. By using a virtual environment the students are more "active" by having avatars that wander and seek out the information to learn. They also take more ownership of their learning as they find the links and explore the space, as well as customize their avatar. This first attempt was basic but it showed some of the potential advantages of using virtual worlds in a day to day learning environment, as well as some of the disadvantages and what could be done to improve to process.

Venue and timing: The VIRTUAL WORLDS EDUCATION ROUNDTABLE (VWER) meetings start at 11:30am SLT / 2:30pm ET / 19:30pm UK time on Thursday, 2nd July in UK’s Glasgow Caledonian University.
