New VC Programs for K12 Added for Spring 2014
NEW Program! - Proteins: Structures, Interactions, and Function
Program Description:
Join Dr. Amish Patel, Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, for this interactive presentation all about proteins as part of the LRSM Lecture Series.
Proteins are engines of all biological activity, pervading all aspects of our lives and those of other living organisms. They perform a wide variety of functions ranging from regulating our moods and fighting
off infections, to enabling us to breathe, digest food, see, move, and even retain a fixed shape. In this presentation, we will discuss how proteins are able to serve as the molecular machinery of life: what they are made off, what they look like, the intermolecular
forces that they experience, and finally how they interact with each other, to allow us to do all the wonderful things that we can do.
Grades: 8-12
Date/Time: May 12th 10:00 am - 11:00am EDT

DNA: Dance of Life
Program Description:
DNA: the Dance of Life is a dance metaphor developed in collaboration with the UC Berkeley dance department that shows through storytelling, dance, animation and music the dynamic nature of the
DNA molecule. This amazing molecule is not only a wonder of architectural genius but is also a prime example of molecular nanotechnology at work, with a demonstrable productivity that is almost to amazing to believe possible.
A 12-minute animated video sets the stage for this presentation as the audience meets the nucleoproteins pairs, Adenine and Thymine, Guanine and Cytosine. They are represented as committed dancing pairs who
reside upon the framework of the now famous double helix known as DNA. With direction from the choreographer, Mr. RNA Polymerase, dancers are chosen to be part of the new production at the theater of the Ribo (Ribosome). Chorus lines of dancers travel on the
M. train (messenger RNA) and the T. train (transfer RNA) to the ribosome, the place where the production will ultimately take place.
With contemporary animation by lead animator Michael Ward assisted by Dan Alfaro and original music scored by John Wineglass an Emmy award-winning musician (“All My Children” and “Smallville”), this movie
and a presentation to follow, though not an exhaustive curriculum, brings to life the wonders of the inner world of DNA.

And there is still plenty of time
to register for these great programs, too!
Stories in Art
Program Description:
Sometimes when art speaks, you want to talk back. Students join the conversation and discover the wealth of stories art can tell as they explore paintings, decorative arts, and
sculpture through a variety of structured looking, writing, and role-playing activities.
Date/Time: May 13th 9:30am - 10:30am EDT

WHYY We Like this Book
Program Description:
Enter the wonderful world of books with WHYY We Like This Book, a partnershipi between WHYY and MAGPI based on the WHYY I Like This Book Program which encourages students to record "spots"
showcasing children sharing the stories that have had an impact on them and why. The WHYY I Like This Book project also includes a series of reading and literacy-focused/child-centered spots featuring distinguished readers on air in short pieces answering
"WHYY I Like This Book." These spots will explore the motivations behind what interests a child about a book -- the topic, the illustrations, the characters, a book that is a family favorite, and how children choose to read what they read expressed in their
own words.
WHYY We Like This Book is an opportunity for an entire classroom to come together in a classroom based activity to select and share their favorite
book with other classrooms around the world. Classrooms will select their favorite book and students can take turns presenting various aspects of how and WHYY they made their book selections followed by interaction with other schools.
Dates/Times:
Thursday May 15th 9:00 - 9:50am EDT - Grades 8-12
Thursday May 15th 10:00 - 10:50am EDT - Grades 4-7
