About The Knowledge Beyond

Geared toward library professionals, educators, and community members, The Knowledge Beyond series explores the resources, information and opportunities for which libraries are essential. Experts and advocates from regional, national and international organizations share their expertise—in a palatable, roundtable format—on a variety topics that libraries promote, including media transliteracies, civic- and social discourses, health-and-wellness initiatives and, of course, BOOKS!

The inaugural session of The Knowledge Beyond features: Africa Access Review

Africa Access expands students’ perspectives with award-winning books on Africa. Each year Africa Access and the Outreach Council of the African Studies Association present awards for the best children’s and young adult books on Africa. This year we are combining the award presentations with a reading challenge. Students who meet the reading challenge will receive a certificate of achievement from the African Studies Association.

Exemplary reading achievements will be recognized at the Children's Africana Awards and Book Festival, Saturday November 9, 2013 at the Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art in Washington, DC. Additionally students (and educators) who register for the challenge will have their names entered into our monthly Africana Book Club Raffle. Winners will receive the book of their choice from one of our recommended book lists.

Africa Access Founder Brenda Randolph will discuss this initiative and the other wonderful works Africa Access does to promote accurate and positive images of Africa and African peoples in literature.

Africa Access, a 501 c (3) organization, was founded in 1989 to help schools, public libraries, and parents improve the quality of their K-12 collections on Africa. For twenty-four years Africa Access has expanded American perspectives on Africa by highlighting books that enhance African cultural literacy and increase reading proficiency.
