I noticed that and wondered about that but i could see sed by doing 
# which sed
/bin/sed

now I have done 
export SED=/bins/sed

and it compiles <yey!> but with one nagging error remaining:

as opensaml-1.1 # ./configure --prefix=/opt/shibboleth-sp --with-curl=/opt/shibboleth-sp --with-log4cpp=/opt/shibboleth-sp --with-openssl=/usr/lib -C > /root/opensamlConfigure.2.log
configure: WARNING: cxxtestgen not found, won't build unit tests


Looks like I now need to install cxxtest:
