Right, a very small thing I missed. but it is the RequestId attribute rather than the AssertionID.

Well, that error doesn't really tell is anything, the log might show more.
But eyeballing the XML, it's not valid SAML 1.1. The AssertionID isn't a
valid XML ID, it starts with a number.

OpenSAML generates valid IDs itself, so you must have supplied it.
