Shibboleth is actually a very good example app. It really is about as simple 
a use of SAML as you're going to find.

Using SAML is only well-defined in a couple of areas:

Browser SSO between sites
Queries for assertions of attributes, authz decisions, or past authn events

Anything else is a new profile, and all you have to work with is the messages 
themselves as building blocks.

If people have specific questions about use of the library, I can easily 
point to specific code they can look at to demonstrate how
to do something. It's deciding what you want to do that's the tricky part.
