Hope your summer is going well! The I2 K20 group is interested in better understanding the range of remotely controlled scientific instruments and other similar resources available via I2 and the regular commercial internet. We've developed a survey
(see note below) to help collect this info. Would you be willing to submit a survey response on the ilabs effort and anything else you have going on these days and perhaps pass it on to anyone else you know who manages remotely controlled instrumentation?
Also, I suspect there may be more than one way to skin this cat and perhaps someone else has already made progress here. Any thoughts or advice on existing directories out there or better ways to collect this info would be greatly appreciated! We
get asked all the time by K-12 science teachers, etc. for a list of remotely controlled instruments on I2 and none of us have seen such a thing!
Best,
James

I'm writing to ask for your help in distributing a brief online survey, developed by members of the Internet2 K20 Initiative remote instrumentation working group, aimed at research scientists and other who manage locally available or remotely accessible laboratories, telescopes, microscopes, sensory arrays, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and various data visualization tools, etc. The goal of the survey is to not only build an inventory of these scientific instruments but also better understand how they are currently being used within the scientific research community and whether opportunities exist to extend access to these resources to K-20 institutions in a mutually beneficial and sustainable manner. NEXT STEPS: We would greatly appreciate your help in forwarding this survey to those best positioned in your community to answer questions about scientific instruments and labs. Here is a link to the survey form: For those participating, the survey should take about 10 minutes to complete. Once submitted, members of the working group may get back in touch to schedule a brief follow up phone conversation with the owners of the instrument. We ask that they complete the survey by 8/31/2015 Below is a sample letter you can send to those who manage scientific instrumentation ----------------------------------------------------------------- Dear XXXX, I would like to invite you to participate in the National Internet2 K20 Initiative scientific instrumentation survey. The Internet2 K20 Initiative will use the information gathered in the survey to help inform researchers and educators of the availability of scientific instrumentation around the globe including STEM equipment and various data visualization tools. In return for your participation, the Internet2 K20 Initiative will provide you with a copy of the final survey results. In addition, there will be an option to include information on your scientific instrumentation in a publicly available directory of resources. You can access the survey at https://goo.gl/SNCYIw. We hope to have all responses by 8/31/2015 with survey results available by 9/18/2015.
The Internet2 K20 Initiative (http://k20.internet2.edu/), part of Internet2’s U.S. Unified Community Anchor Network (U.S. UCAN) effort, connects over 90,000 K-12 schools, community colleges, universities, libraries, science centers, and museums to the Internet2 Network. Your feedback is very important to us. Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey. If you have any questions or comments about the survey, please contact James Werle, Director, K20 Initiative, Internet2 . Sincerely, {XXXX} ------------------------------------------
Thank you in advance for your help with this effort. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions. Sincerely, James
James Werle Director, K20 Initiative Internet2
