<> Internet2 Activities at SC2004
Internet2, and Internet2 members, are participating in several aspects of 
SC2004, taking place 6-12 November 2004 in Pittsburgh. The annual SC 
conference highlights the most innovative developments in high-performance 
computing and advanced networking. The Internet2 booth (#2241) in the 
SC2004 exhibit area will feature a series of mini-presentations on topics 
such as network performance tools, security, digital video, and more. SC 
Global 2004 features presentations on innovative uses of interactive 
technology and also provides a behind-the-scenes look at the technology 
required to produce this geographically distributed event. SC Global 
presentations emphasize advances in AccessGrid (AG) technology and describe 
how the AG is being used for scientific and artistic collaborations and for 
reaching out to underserved areas. SC Global is accessible to sites running 
the AG Toolkit. In addition, the Internet2 Commons is providing a VBrick 
MPEG-2 stream (accessible to anyone using the free VBrick Streamplayer 
client), a Windows Media stream, and an HD over DVIP stream at 19.2 Mbps.

<> Internet2 and Members Contribute to SCinet
Internet2 and several members of the Internet2 community are making 
significant contributions to SCinet, the collection of high-performance 
networks built each year to support the SC Conference. In partnership with 
Qwest Communications, Level 3 Communications, and MCI--SCinet is providing 
direct wide area connectivity to Internet2's Abilene Network and to many 
other networks worldwide. In addition, SCinet is working with National 
Lambda Rail to provide very high bandwidth transit for several national 
optical network testbeds into Pittsburgh for the conference. Internet2 will 
provide a map showing current utilization on all SCinet external links, 
based on the technology used for the Abilene weather map, developed by the 
Abilene Network Operations Center (NOC) at Indiana University. In addition 
to general network monitoring, an Internet2 team has set up performance 
measurement points running OWAMP, NDT, and BWCTL at the NOC. Regularly 
scheduled tests will be run to both ESnet and to Abilene nodes, monitoring 
the quality of the peering between SCinet and other research networks. 
On-demand tests to all three nodes will be used to debug network 
performance issues.

<> Internet2/CANARIE Multicast Hands-On Workshop
Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia is hosting the 
Internet2/CANARIE Multicast Hands-On Workshop, 20-22 November. Workshop 
participants will design and set up a set of inter-connected multicast 
networks. The hands-on workshop will include a set of exercises for small 
network teams. Each team will work on a mix of router types and over the 
course of the workshop will configure their own network and then 
interconnect with the other teams. Participants will learn to engineer 
multicast network, troubleshoot multicast problems, and explain multicast 
engineering concepts to peers.

<> Spring 2005 Internet2 Member Meeting Call for Proposals
The Spring 2005 Internet2 Member Meeting will be held 2-4 May 2005 in 
Arlington, Virginia. A Call for Proposals for topic sessions will be issued 
on 8 December 2004, with a submission deadline of Friday, 21 January 2005. 
Proposal submitters will be notified regarding acceptance of their 
proposals by 18 February.

<> Mark Your Calendars for Winter ESCC/Internet2 Joint Techs Workshop
The University of Utah in Salt Lake City will host the Winter 2005 
ESCC/Internet2 Joint Techs Workshop during the week of 13 February. 
Tutorials will be held Sunday afternoon and plenary sessions will start 
Monday morning and run until lunch on Wednesday. In-depth sessions will be 
held Wednesday afternoon and (possibly) Thursday morning. Focus areas are 
still under development, but will include wireless. There will also be BoFs 
and Vendor Soup sessions as well as various Internet2 Working Groups, 
Special Interest Groups, and side meetings over lunch on Monday and Tuesday 
and at the hotel in the evenings. A reception will be held on Monday evening.

<> Quilt Regional Optical Networking Workshop
The Quilt, in conjunction with MCNC, will be hosting the second Fiber 
Workshop on 30 November-2 December in Research Triangle Park, NC. This 
workshop will focus on issues associated with building and managing metro 
or regional optical networking infrastructure. A true example topology will 
be used as a case study, including presentations by vendors on how their 
equipment would be deployed over this topology. Specific topics covered 
will include fiber types, optical networking equipment, optical testing, 
regional optical networks, and backbones.

+ "Click to Meet" Internet2 Grant Program
First Virtual Communications, Inc. an Internet2 corporate sponsor and 
provider of infrastructure software and solutions for real-time, rich media

Click to Meet combines high-quality, standards-based multipoint audio, 
video, and web collaboration in a single web browser interface. Educational

<> Applications Update

+ Joint Internet2/NLM Tutorials and Demos at RSNA
Internet2, the National Library of Medicine (NLM), and the Metropolitan 
Research and Education Network (MREN) are collaborating to present a series 
of tutorials and demonstrations of advanced networking technology and its 
future application in the healthcare arena. These tutorials and demos will 
be featured at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North 
America (RSNA), which will take place in Chicago from 28 November to 3 
December 2004. Around 30,000 radiologists, healthcare administrators, 
technologists and scientists, plus another 30,000 imaging and information 
system vendors from all over the world, are expected to attend RSNA 2004 
making it one of the world's largest medical meetings.

+ Megaconference VI on December 9
Join your colleagues from around the globe for a participatory conference 
via videoconference. Now in its sixth year, the Megaconference has been a 
hallmark event for learning about cutting-edge uses of videoconferencing.

+ Ruth Lilly Health Education Center Celebrates 15 Years
The Ruth Lilly Health Education Center (RLHEC), located in Indianapolis, 
IN, is a not-for-profit organization with a mission of providing health 
education through innovative presentations that promote healthy lifestyle 
choices for children and adults. RLHEC, who became an Internet2 member in 
June 2004, used their recent 15th anniversary celebration to demonstrate 
the potential of advanced networking technology for use in outreach and 
education. The celebration featured 3D simulation movies of dental health, 
anatomy, and other health-related topics, developed for RLHEC through their 
close affiliation with the Indiana University School of Informatics. 
Darrell Bailey, Executive Associate Dean of IU's School of Informatics, was 
among the presenters.  Another demonstration featured Steve Senger from the 
University of Wisconsin - LaCrosse who gave attendees a virtual tour of 
human digital anatomy using the innovative tools he developed in 
conjunction with Parvati Dev, and other collaborators, at Stanford University.

<> International Update

+ Chinese American Networking Symposium Conference
The Chinese American Networking Symposium (CANS) conference will be held 30 
November to 2 December in Miami, FL. Networking experts from China and the 
United States gather annually at CANS to discuss new ideas and advancements 
in networking technologies. The annual programs, alternately held in the US 
and China, include presentations by networking experts, panel discussions, 
and executive and technical breakout sessions. Internet2, along with the 
Chinese Association for Science and Technology (CAST-USA) and the China 
Education and Research Network (CERNET) and China Science and Technology 
Network (CSTNET) are organizers of the event. CANS2004 will be hosted in 
Miami at the Kovens Conference Center at Florida International University. 
Simultaneous Chinese/English translation will be provided.

+ CUDI advances applications and collaborations
CUDI (Corporacion Universitaria para el Desarrollo de Internet), the 
not-for-profit corporation in charge of the advanced research and education 
network in Mexico, had its bi-annual member meeting in Acapulco, Mexico 
from October 14-15. Highlights of the meeting included many exciting demos 
on robotics, nanotechnology, tele-medicine, grids, earth sciences, virtual 
reality and a live "opera" performance, as well as presentations on ongoing 
collaborations taking place over the CUDI network and with several partner 
networks around the world, including Internet2's Abilene Network. Leaders 
of the Internet2 community spoke at the conference, including Dr. Larry R. 
Faulkner, President of the University of Texas and Chair of Internet2's 
Board of Trustees; Dr. Doug Van Houweling, President and CEO of Internet2 
and Dr. Sangtae Kim, Director of Shared Cyberinfrastructure at the CISE 
Directorate at the US National Science Foundation, as well as other 
renowned leaders from the global networking community. CUDI, an Internet2 
international partner since 1999, has over 400 Mbps of connectivity into 
the Internet2 backbone network and connects over 80 Mexican universities 
and research centers.

<> Middleware Update

+ Shibboleth
- Phase 1 of the Shibboleth Federal e-authentication pilot project has been 
successfully completed. The Shibboleth software was modified to meet the 
e-auth specification and successfully inter-operated with e-auth test 
sites. Phase 2 will complete the implementation of the e-auth support, 
which will make Shibboleth v1.3 software e-auth compliant. Subsequent work 
is intended to align policy and trust models around the technology. E-Authn 
certification would mean that campuses could use the Shibboleth software, 
and the InCommon federation, to interact with Federal government web sites.

- Elsevier's ScienceDirect recently completed its pilot project with a 
small group of campuses including Dartmouth College, Georgetown University, 
New York University, Penn State, and University of California, San Diego to 
deploy and test Shibboleth. This will ensure ScienceDirect is in a good 
position to make Shibboleth authentication available to a wider audience 
and helps Shibboleth and the InQueue/InCommon federations move forward. If

- NSF has recently awarded Argonne National Laboratory and the National 
Computational Science Alliance (NCSA) funding for a "Policy Controlled 
Attribute Framework."  These projects will integrate "GSI and Shibboleth to 
form a robust attribute infrastructure for campus environments to enable 
secure verification of user attributes by inter-institutional Grid

- Article on Shibboleth in EDUCAUSE Quarterly

Approach" co-authored by R. L. "Bob" Morgan, Scott Cantor, Steven Carmody, 
Walter Hoehn, and Ken Klingenstein can be found in the recently released

+ Federations
- International Meeting: Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure
An international peering meeting was held in the Cotswolds, UK, on 14-15 
October to discuss interconnecting national authentication and 
authorization infrastructures to support the research and education 
community internationally. The meeting was attended by representatives from 
Australia, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, UK, US, and CERN. 
Documents, experiences, and issues relating to national federations were 
shared. Issues included agreeing on policy framework, comparing policies, 
correlating application usage to trust level, aligning privacy needs, 
working with multinational service providers, and scaling the WAYF 
function. Discussions focused on Internal Federations, Inter-Federations, 
and Union of Federations. Major outcomes included assembling a "cookbook" 
or guidance documentation, establishing a website for communication, and 
potentially establishing a short-term position to coordinate the activities.

- The Inside ID Conference, taking place in Washington, DC on 15-17 
November, will include a track on Models of Federated ID and Web Services.

- Middleware presentation at CNI
The Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) will hold its next meeting on 
6-7 December in Portland, OR. This is a reminder to those who will be

+ Diagnostics
The middleware E2E diagnostics pilot and proof of concept for the Common 
Event Record and the Diagnostic Backplane Concept have been successfully 
completed. The group is now taking the lessons learned and applying them to

In response to the recent Signet early adopter CFP, three institutions have 
been accepted into the program. They are the University of

The Internet2 MACE-Directories Working Group is preparing a draft 
specification of attributes to express membership relationships. This 
specification will follow a new style of schema declaration, which 
facilitates representation in different technological contexts such as LDAP 
directories and SAML messages. The Working Group's Grouper project is 
ramping up to its initial release, expected to occur in December in 
conjunction with the upcoming 6th release of National Science Foundation 
Middleware Initiative components.

<> FiberCo Update

+  Florida LambdaRail Acquires FiberCo Dark Fiber for Regional Optical Network
FiberCo announced that Florida LambdaRail LLC (FLR), a consortium of nine 
public and private Florida universities has purchased the rights to 1,540 
route miles of dark fiber and collocation services from FiberCo, under an 
agreement with Level 3 Communications, Inc. Utilizing FiberCo's 
national-scale wholesale pricing structure and streamlined fiber 
acquisition process, FLR acquired the dark fiber at a significantly 
discounted rate and will use the network facilities to create an advanced 
optical network that connects campuses and institutions across the state.

+ Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Allocated FiberCo Dark Fiber
FiberCo announced that the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), 
one of nine U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) multi-program national 
laboratories, has purchased the rights to 561 route-miles of Level 3 
Communications inter-city dark fiber optic cable between Seattle, 
Washington, and Boise, Idaho, with an additional lateral connection to 
Richland, Washington. The new fiber will enable PNNL to establish 
next-generation optical network connections to the new DOE UltraScience 
Network, the Pacific Northwest Gigapop in Seattle, Internet2's Abilene 
Network, and other national and international high-performance networks.

Louis Fox, Director of the Internet2 K20 Initiative, presented at an FCC 
hearing on 6 October 2004 making the case for increased support for 
broadband in K12, museums, and libraries across the country. An excellent

<> Internet2 Showcases and Spotlights

+ The Envision Center for Data Perceptualization
Scientists and researchers at Purdue University can collaborate with teams 
worldwide to analyze the movement of the earth's plates, image areas of the 
brain and spine, or design the next-generation automobile. The Envision 
Center for Data Perceptualization enables such research by providing a 
special facility for 3D visualization of data. The mission of the Envision 
Center is to address the exponential growth of data that has resulted from 
advances in computing and instrumentation techniques and provide efficient 
tools for the interpretation, or "perceptualization," of this data across 
multiple disciplines. Large-scale visualization facilities such as the 
Access Grid and CAVE virtual-reality environments--as well as haptic 
devices that allow researchers to "feel" data using sensory feedback--have 
emerged as key technologies in this realm. Through the Envision Center's 
connection to the Abilene Network, these tools and resources are now 
accessible for collaborations worldwide. Purdue is also a Teragrid site, 
providing their researchers with access to a distributed supercomputing 
infrastructure across the US. Representatives from the Envision Center will 
be demonstrating some of their innovative technologies at the upcoming SC 
Global, held in conjunction with SC2004 (6-12 November 2004 in Pittsburgh).

Gary Dietz leads First Virtual Communications' activities in the Internet2 
community. As the education marketing manager at First Virtual, he is

K-12 institutions. Gary interacts daily with educators to extend his
