<> Middleware Update
+ Shibboleth
Shibboleth v1.2 will be available mid-May. The Shibboleth target will run
with the Apache 2.0 Web server and the previously supported Apache 1.3.x, as
well as IIS 5.x and 6. Targets will have significantly more flexibility and
functionality in configuring themselves to meet the demands of publishing
static and dynamic content, supporting multiple applications, from multiple
hosts, while being a member of multiple federations; Origins will also see
significantly more flexibility in their configuration options. Targets will
support "Lazy" sessions, deferring the creation of a Shibboleth session
until the application determines it is needed. This release includes
flexible support for multilateral and bilateral trust arrangements, as well
as support for more types of key and certificate formats. The target will
provide improved plugability for many aspects of the system, including
access control modules.

+ National Science Foundation Middleware Initiative (NMI)
The CUMREC Conference in Austin, 16-19 May, will feature two sessions on
identity management including a track session entitled "Shibboleth:
Federated Identity Management" and a pre-conference seminar on "Identity
Management Systems: Components, Constituents and Collaboration."

+ CAMP Shibboleth Implementation Workshop, 28-30 June
The CAMP Shibboleth Implementation Workshop provides CIOs, IT architects,
directors, technical librarians, technical staff, and others concerned with
sharing resources among institutions the opportunity to come together to
discuss the planning, policy, and federation requirements associated with
implementing Shibboleth, as well as the technical specifics of deploying it.

Group (MACE-MList)
The MACE-MList Group was initiated at the recent Internet2 Spring 2004
Member Meeting with a well-attended "Birds of a Feather" (BoF) session for
all interested participants. The goal of MACE-MList is to research the
issues surrounding middleware-enablement of mailing list services, consider
and implement a survey of current university mailing list users to identify
favorite features, needed improvements, and notable warts, include persons
who are actively working on integration with the enterprise/federation using
non-proprietary technology. Experiences will be shared regarding
application designs best supporting infrastructure. Working group members
will test-drive pilot/prototype solutions.

<> Internet2 Security
+ New Security Working Groups
SALSA-Arch Working Group
SALSA-Arch is the new working group created by SALSA, the oversight group
consisting of technical representatives from the higher education community
who will advise on leading edge technology issues, provide prioritization,
and set directions in the security space, to investigate issues related to
the identification of functions or components used to prevent unauthorized
or enabled authorized access to data or resources, for the purpose of
improving communication, the selection of design rules to facilitate
operations or enable new services, and the adoption of specific techniques
of interest to the community that may impact the above. These activities
must accommodate a wide range of campus and departmental security policies,
procedures, and schemas - the details of which are beyond this group's
scope.
http://security.internet2.edu/arch/

SALSA-NetAuth Working Group
SALSA-NetAuth is the new working group created by SALSA to investigate the
various techniques that currently exist to provide identification,
registration, and authorized access to campus networks. The focus and
initial goals will include investigation of requirements and implementations
of network database and registration services in support of network security
management, investigation of extensions to these services to proactively
detect and prevent unauthorized or malicious network activity, and the
analysis and an initial proposal toward supporting network access to
visiting scientists among federated institutions.

The P2P WG met twice at the Spring Member Meeting to discuss several
exciting projects – the use of Napster at two member universities (which
significantly reduces the drain on the campus network) and LionShare, a
legitimate file-sharing tool being developed by Penn State in conjunction
with Internet2.

+ E2E piPEs (End-to-End Performance Initiative Performance Environment
System)
During April, E2E piPEs team members were involved in several presentations
about piPEs and related tools during Spring Member Meeting. Progress was
also made in:

- Network Diagnostic Tester (NDT) Integration
New NDT servers were installed in the StarLight facility, at Abilene’s
Seattle GigaPoP, at Abilene’s Indianapolis GigaPoP, and in the Internet2 Ann
Arbor offices. The Ann Arbor node is accessible at:
