<> National Research and Education Fiber Company (Fiberco)
Internet2 has recently established the National Research and Education Fiber
Company (Fiberco) to support regional fiber optical networking initiatives
dedicated to research and higher education. Fiberco complements existing
Internet2 network infrastructure by providing a means for acquiring,
holding, and distributing fiber optic network assets. As a supporting
project that is complementary to national efforts such as National Lambda
Rail (NLR), Fiberco helps Internet2 meet a critical objective by
facilitating the ongoing development of regional optical networking
initiatives around the country. Questions concerning Fiberco may be
directed via e-mail to
<>
or see:

<> Northwestern University and C-SPAN Provide Advanced Network Video
Internet2 members Northwestern University and C-SPAN are collaborating to
make live, high-quality C-SPAN and C-SPAN2 broadcasts available 24 hours a
day to anyone with a multicast-capable Internet2 network connection. This
experimental, research broadcast project is made possible through
Northwestern University's high-performance networking and a cooperative
partnership with C-SPAN. All common operating systems are supported for
viewing. The only requirement is a current Java-enabled browser. For more
information, see:
http://www.i2-multicast.northwestern.edu/
<> Internet2 Health Sciences Security Sponsored Interest Group
All Internet2 members are invited to participate in the new Internet2 Health
Sciences Security Sponsored Interest Group (SIG), which has been formed to
promote policies, practices, and projects that overcome security and
privacy-related barriers to the adoption of emerging Internet technologies
in the health sciences. Issues to be considered include: technology and
policy to secure videoconferences for telemedicine and medical education;
network architectures, technology and policies for secure high performance
network capabilities to support advanced applications; security and privacy
of protected health information and physician-patient communications; and
technologies, middleware and policies needed for inter-institutional, remote
provider and patient access to electronic medical records. Corporate members
are encouraged to participate in this SIG. To discuss research priorities or
participation opportunities, contact Jere Retzer,

+ Videoconferencing for Members through the Internet2 Commons
Plan now to take advantage of Internet2 Commons videoconferencing services
for fall activities through one of three subscription opportunities for
Internet2 members: Campus, Community, and Community Plus. The Campus
subscription will support the needs of campus- or institution-wide
videoconferencing. The Community subscription will target the needs of
smaller groups, such as departments within an organization or groups
crossing organizational boundaries. If no site coordinator is available to
support your videoconferencing, the Community Plus plan has been developed
to fill that necessary role. Schedule your fall classes or meeting times
with the conferencing capabilities of the Internet2 Commons. For more
information, contact Jonathan Tyman Internet2 Manager for Digital Video at
<>,
+1.734.352.7099. For more information about the
Internet2 Commons, see:

+ Lewis and Clark Videoconference with Sacagawea's Tribe
In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Lewis & Clark expedition, a
three year long re-enactment is in progress, retracing the route of these
early American explorers. The Internet2 Commons will provide H.323
videoconferencing and streaming video connections via the Internet-to-Go
satellite trailer developed by Bob Dixon of Ohio State University and
OARnet. Live, video streams will document the trip and give students and
others a chance to interact with the expedition, with Sacagaweas tribe, and
others they will encounter along the way. The collaboration includes K-12
schools, Native American tribes, MOREnet, Apple Computer, Native American
tribes, and others. For more information about the event, visit the Apple
Learning Interchange at:

networking applications in astronomy, high-energy and nuclear physics
(HENP), and other scientific communities are now available. The activities
of working groups, including the Geospatial Working Group, and SIGs,
including the HENP SIG, are also featured at:
http://science.internet2.edu
+ Arts & Humanities Info Sheet
A new Arts & Humanities info sheet is now available. The topics covered in
this info sheet include applications of high-performance networking for live
performance, distance education, and streaming uncompressed video and audio.
Each Internet2 member organization may request up to 100 copies of this info
sheet by sending email to

international peering and interconnection point located at the Pacific
Northwest Gigapop in Seattle, WA. SingAREN is a project funded by the Agency
for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) in Singapore, to provide a
high-speed broadband network platform to support research and education
(R&E) and advanced network technology development in Singapore. SingAREN
also operates a 6 Mbps ATM link to APAN, Asia-Pacific Advanced
Network(APAN).
Pacific Northwest Gigapop (PNWGP) is the Northwest's Next Generation
Internet, Internet2/Abilene applications cooperative, test bed, point of
presence, and home to the Pacific Wave International Peering Service. PNWGP

Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure
SWITCH, the Swiss Education and Research Network, is utilizing Shibboleth as
the architecture for AAI - Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure.
SWITCH is aiming at simplifying inter-organizational access to networked
services. SWITCH serves the Swiss science university network, connecting 12
of the 14 major sites through SWITCH-owned dark fibers. SWITCH also connects
to the Pan-European high performance network, GEANT, at 2.5 Gbps. For more
information about SWITCH and the AII, see:

At the TERENA conference in Zagreb, Croatia, in May, conference participants
from North America and Europe agreed to hold a series of working conference
calls over the summer. The goal of the calls is to define a complementary
set of global, national, and local person schema with as much common
agreement on syntax and semantics as is realistically achievable. For more
information, see:

Measurement Infrastructure (piPEs/ AMI)
Eric Boyd and Matt Zekauskas attended the University College of London (UCL)
E2E Monitoring Conference; they also met with staff from DANTE and Peter
Clarkes UCL team who are participating in the E2E piPEs development effort.
Outcomes of these meetings include a revised architecture, with improvements
to modularity, interfaces, security, and configurability. Enhanced software
development collaboration is expected with both teams. Eric Boyd also

+ Campus Network Infrastructure (CNI) Guide
The project team is working on three deliverables: 1) a document resource
library of links to previously created documents that users may find
helpful (see: http://e2epi.internet2.edu/CNIGuideDocLib.html); 2) a How To
document that addresses upgrades, protocol changes, and discovering both
what you can do with what you already have and what can/can not be upgraded;
and 3) a document addressing the policy and politics of change at the campus
level (focusing on such topics as creating a committee, getting buy in, and
enforcing telecommunications standards at the same level of importance with
electrical/HVAC/plumbing standards).
