Australian Advanced Internet Research and Education Program and Internet2 to
Collaborate on New Network Technologies and Applications

September 9, 1999 -- Washington, DC - Leaders of both the Internet2(tm)
project and the Australian Advanced Internet Research and Education Program
(AAIREP) signed an agreement in Canberra, Australia to collaborate on
developing the next generation of Internet technologies and applications for
the research and education community. The agreement will provide a basis for
the two countries to work together toward establishing high-performance
Internet connectivity between their respective universities in order to
enable researchers to collaborate across the Pacific ocean.

"Today's Internet enables US researchers, teachers and students to
communicate and work with their colleagues around the globe. This agreement
between AAIREP will enhance the potential for collaboration between research
and education communities in the United States and Australia,” said Douglas
Van Houweling, President and CEO of UCAID, which is leading the Internet2
initiative.

As part of the agreement, AAIREP and Internet2 agree to:
· promote appropriate interconnection between and among their respective
members and networks for the purpose of development and pre-commercial
testing and use of advanced research and education applications;

· collaborate on the development of common standards and technical
implementations across their respective networks;

· promote collaboration between their constituent member organizations and
institutions relating to the development of next-generation networking and
applications in research and higher education; and

· encourage technology transfer from their joint endeavors to accelerate the
availability of new services and applications.

Internet2, a project of the University Corporation for Advanced Internet
Development provides leadership and direction for advanced networking
development within the U.S. university community. Its programs are devoted
to network research, technology transfer, and collaborative activities in
related fields such as distance learning and educational technology.
Internet2 is a collaborative project by over 160 U.S. research universities,
in partnership with industry leaders and U.S. federal agencies, to develop a
new family of advanced applications to meet emerging academic requirements
in research, teaching and learning. Internet2 is addressing this challenge
by creating a leading edge network capability that includes the nationwide
high-performance Abilene network for use by its members.
