Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information Lawrence E. Strickling to Keynote Internet2’s 2015 Global Summit Meeting

Strickling to discuss global Internet governance and the multistakeholder model

WASHINGTON, March 12, 2015—Internet2 announced today that Lawrence Strickling, Assistant Secretary for Communications and Information at the U.S. Department of Commerce and Administrator of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), will be a keynote speaker at its Global Summit 2015 meeting taking place April 26-30 in Washington.

Strickling will discuss the importance of global Internet governance to the research and higher education community.  In particular, his keynote will explain how privatization of the domain name system will facilitate the security, stability and openness of the Internet.  He will also describe the multistakeholder model of governance and address the value of input from academics and technical experts.

“Assistant Secretary Strickling’s perspective on collaboration amongst the technical Internet community is a welcome addition to the Global Summit program,” said H. David Lambert, president and CEO of Internet2. “His extensive experience in telecom and collaborative programs will provide a unique view of the challenges and successes in Internet governance today and how those impact the broader research and higher education community. Global Summit is about bringing together that community’s top technology, business and education leaders and we’re pleased to have Assistant Secretary Strickling join us for the event.”

A technology policy expert with more than two decades of experience in the public and private sectors, Strickling was sworn in as assistant secretary in June 2009. In this role, Strickling serves as administrator of NTIA, the Executive Branch agency that is principally responsible for advising the President on telecommunications and information policy. At NTIA, Strickling leads initiatives to expand broadband Internet access and adoption across America, free up more wireless spectrum for commercial broadband services and ensure that the Internet remains an engine for continued innovation, research and economic growth.

Previously, Strickling held positions at Broadwing Communications, Allegiance Telecom, CoreExpress, the Federal Communications Commission, Regional Bell Operating Company Ameritech Corp., and as a litigation partner in a Chicago law firm. Strickling earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School and his bachelor’s in economics from the University of Maryland.

The Global Summit is Internet2’s annual meeting that showcases how the research and education (R&E) community is transforming the way research and scholarship are conceived and conducted. The 2015 meeting will focus on the advancement of research capabilities through collaborative innovations in IT infrastructure and applications. Through strong academic leadership, perceptive global engagement and advanced innovations in networking and services, the Internet2 community continues its legacy of leading the way in expanding and transforming the global R&E community’s capabilities to advance research and academic excellence.

The 2015 Internet2 Global Summit will take place April 26-30 at the Renaissance Washington, D.C. Downtown Hotel. For more information on the event program or to register to attend, visit meetings.internet2.edu/2015-global-summit.
