Internet2 and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Show How Telepresence Advances Important Telehealth Initiatives
LIVE Telehealth demonstration presented during Internet2 Spring Member Conference keynote session

Arlington, VA - April 29, 2009 - Internet2 members attending their Spring Member Meeting in Arlington, Virginia, witnessed how leading- edge “telepresence” technology can be harnessed to advance important telehealth initiatives. The demonstration, developed by Internet2 and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, connected a local psychiatrist with a remotely located “wounded warrior” veteran patient for a simulated psychiatric diagnosis session. The demonstration represented the first Cisco TelePresence session held over the Internet2 Network.

Internet2 with its regional network partners, connects over 55,000 research and education institutions in the US. Cisco TelePresence incorporates high-quality spatial audio and life-like, low-latency, 1080p high-definition video in a specially tuned environment to deliver an immersive experience for users. The Internet2 community, comprised of leaders in research and education, has consistently been early adopters of telepresence technologies, which deliver rich, real- time content over advanced network pipelines. These leading-edge capabilities support the wide range of remote collaborations to enable advanced applications in the domains of science and engineering, arts and humanities, and telehealth. Wednesday’s demonstration spotlights how telepresence technologies can revolutionize health services for patients that do not have direct access to quality specialists.
