Internet2 Announces Board of Trustees Election Results

University, Research, and Industry Leaders to Provide Guidance for U.S. Research and Education Technology Consortium

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - March 18, 2008 - Internet2 today announced the results of its 2008 Board of Trustees elections. Representing leaders from academia, research, and industry, Internet2’s Board of Trustees provides strategic guidance, directs the setting of priorities, and ensures that Internet2 continues to meet the needs of the research and education community which it serves.

"We extend our congratulations to these new Board members as well as our sincere thanks to the voting representatives who elected them," said Jeff Lehman, chair of the Internet2 Board of Trustees. "This member-focused Board will provide strategic direction, leadership and oversight, and each brings a strong commitment to ensuring the Internet2 community’s continued growth and success."

In 2007, the Internet2 Governance and Nominations Committee (GNC) developed a new board structure to better reflect and represent the diverse membership of Internet2. In addition to providing seats for university presidents, the Board now includes representatives from among chief information officers, network researchers, discipline researchers, and industry partners. The Board elections were managed by the GNC and the results were verified by an independent auditor.

"We are very grateful to all the candidates for their willingness to stand for election and their demonstrated commitment to the community," said Steve Hall, chair of the GNC. "We are also grateful to the community for taking the time to carefully consider the candidates and cast votes. Community participation is an essential part of making Internet2’s governance structure function well and reflect the needs and priorities of the community it serves."

Eligible voters included the Executive Liaison from each Internet2 member organization or institution. The Executive Liaison from the university and affiliate members cast their vote for the CIO and researcher candidates. The Executive Liaisons from corporate member organizations voted for the industry candidate. The CEOs for each Internet2 member organization cast their vote for the CEO constituency via a paper ballot. The new board will take office on May 6, 2008.
