QWEST PARTNERS WITH CENTENNIAL TO LINK UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO
TO UNIVERSITIES AROUND THE WORLD UPR FIRST CARRIBBEAN LOCAL
TO HOOK INTO ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY BACKBONE
Denver, January 30, 2001 - Qwest Communications International Inc., the
broadband Internet communications company, today announced that it is part
of a contract awarded to Centennial de Puerto Rico by the University of
Puerto Rico (UPR) to provide network services for the Puerto Rican Internet2
Services Association (PRISA) network. Qwest's Government Systems Division
has an agreement to subcontract the long distance portion of this offering
through Centennial, which will serve as the prime contractor to UPR.
Centennial is one of the local providers in Puerto Rico.
"We are honored Centennial selected us to partner with them in this
momentous project," said James F.X. Payne, senior vice president for Qwest
Government Systems Division. "We believe our long-standing involvement and
success with the Internet2 network has uniquely positioned Qwest to provide
critical support to the UPR PRISA network, both in its formative stages and
as it progresses in the coming years."
Qwest will use its broadband fiber network to provide an undersea fiber
optic facility for the project, linking Centennial's local infrastructure in
Puerto Rico to a point of presence in Florida. The local and cross-Atlantic
connections will allow the five UPR campuses that will form the PRISA
network, including the Arecibo Observatory, to link with other universities
around the world. Internet2(R) is a consortium led by over 180 universities
working in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy
advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of
tomorrow's Internet. The PRISA project is a significant step in the
introduction of high-speed data networks originating in Puerto Rico.
Qwest and its Government Systems Division will continue to support UPR,
Internet2, and programs associated with the NSF, along with other US Federal
Agencies and operations in Puerto Rico.
"The wideband connection that PRISA provides will allow the University of
Puerto Rico's researchers to collaborate in real time with state of the art
research facilities worldwide," stated Dr. Norman Maldonado, President of
the University of Puerto Rico (UPR).
"Because of its real time functionality," added Naji Khoury, Centennial's
Wireline Services Marketing Director, "we foresee that it will be mostly
beneficial for videoconferencing, telemedicine, virtual labs, real time
access to the world's best supercomputing facilities, and operating research
equipment at a distance, among a wide range of applications."
