PORTLAND RESEARCH AND EDUCATION NETWORK DEMONSTRATES INTERNET2

New High-Speed Connection Will Benefit Higher Education, Health and Business

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Research and Education Network (PREN) will
demonstrate the next
generation of Internet connectivity, Internet2, as well as discuss how this
connection could benefit
Oregonians at three events in the Portland area on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000.

PREN is a joint venture of Oregon Graduate Institute (OGI), Oregon Health
Sciences University (OHSU) and
Portland State University (PSU). Internet2 is a high-speed dedicated
computer network under development
by leading U.S. universities and research institutions. The three
Portland-area institutions created PREN to
share resources and foster collaboration among the schools as well as
advance the availability of
leading-edge Internet capabilities in the Portland metropolitan area.

A conference on Internet2 will begin at 9 a.m. at PSU's Hoffmann Hall (1833
SW 11th) with a welcome by
the university presidents and Portland City Commissioner Erik Sten. Douglas
Van Houweling, the
President and CEO of the University Consortium for Advanced Internet
Development will deliver an
address on the national significance of Internet2 and the role of leading
universities in developing the
project. At 11 a.m., there will be live demonstrations by OGI, OHSU and PSU
researchers of work they are
doing that uses advanced Internet capabilities, including remote control of
advanced instrumentation and
video conferencing, and high-fidelity imaging for medical research.

In the afternoon, OHSU will host a session on health science applications of
Internet2 at the OHSU Library
Auditorium. Guest speakers will include Mike Ackerman from the National
Library of Medicine, Mary Kratz
from the Internet2 Health Sciences Initiative program and George Lundberg
from Medscape. This 1 p.m.
session will include further demonstrations of the project's capabilities
and a panel discussion on health
sciences and the future of Internet2.

PREN, with support from the Pittock Block, will host a second afternoon
session, "Taking the Portland
Internet to the Next Level," at 2 p.m. at the Governor Hotel (611 SW 10th)
in downtown Portland. The
session will include an address by Steve Corbato, Internet2 Network
Director, followed by a panel
discussion. Panelists include Portland City Commissioner Erik Sten,
EasyStreet CEO Rich Bader, GST
technologist Ben Peeke, Pittock Block Manager Tom Bechtell and Corbato.

More information on PREN, including mission, goals, architecture, projects
and contacts is available at
http://www.pren.net. Information on Internet2 is available at
http://www.internet2.edu.

Contact PREN Chair Jere Retzer, 503 494-3720 for questions on PREN and
Internet2.

Media interviews may be arranged in advance with guest speakers, researchers
and PREN board
members.
