Funet to be upgraded to 2.5 gigabit capacity

CSC chooses Sonera for its high power network operator
Finnish center for high performance computing and networking CSC will speed
up the Finnish University and Research
Network Funet to 2.5 Gbps per second. The update is scheduled for completion
at the beginning of 2001 and it will make
Funet one of the world's most powerful data network providers for the field
of research and academic education. Other
academic networks with the same operational speed include Abilene of the
American Internet2 and the Dutch Surfnet.
The aim of the new network is to create an infrastructure for new academic
services such as the virtual university,
distance education, and video conferences. The new network will also
facilitate mobile and broadband networks supporting
education and research. As an example, the transfer rate of 2.5 Gbps enables
a book of over 100,000 pages to be
transmitted in just one second.

- The reliable operation of the Funet network will become even more
important over the next few years as the academic
community transfers more and more new applications and communication over
the Internet. This is why the new data network
is imperative, says Markus Sadeniemi, Technology Director at CSC.

Over the past few years the amount of data communication transferred through
Funet has increased by about 150 percent
per year. The extensive growth in traffic is due to the fact that the
research community and students have become
increasingly active network users and to Funet's proactive implementation of
new network services and technologies.

In addition to the data communication network to be renewed, CSC provides
its client organizations with basic data
communication services, including information security and 24-hour daily
maintenance. The Funet network enables
researchers and students access also to other academic networks, such as
Internet2. Furthermore, Funet's new network
interfaces are physically located in university facilities. This helps to
enlarge the role of universities in the
development of data communication infrastructure.

The agreement between CSC and Sonera is an extension of their long-term
collaboration in building state-of-the-art
networks, network management, and development cooperation. The same
technology is applied both in the Funet network and
in Sonera's new generation client networks. Sonera's network application is
the first broadband WDM client network with
countrywide coverage and access capacity of tens of gigabits.

Approaching the WorldWide Grid
Led by the Ministry of Education, Finland is one of the leading European
countries implementing the eEurope 2002 Action
Plan of the European Commission. The target of the plan is to increase the
capacity of research networks in Member
States to 2.5 gigabits by the end of 2001. Uninett, a Norwegian academic
network, has also initiated a similar project
at the beginning of September. The high-speed networks are able to offer
brand new types of opportunities for European
research and education collaboration. The aim of the eEurope 2002 program is
to support the development of the WWG
(WorldWide Grid). In the GRID initiatives, powerful supercomputers can be
linked to perform demanding scientific
computations using high-speed networking. As an example, this would enable
Cern, the European Laboratory of Particle
Physics, to make computer runs with national supercomputers in different
countries.

Do you know exactly what time it is? RNP has installed an antenna that
receives information from satellites and can tell time with nearly total
precision. This new service is called "NTP Stratum 1 Server." The NTP -
Network Time Protocol servers allow customers to synchronize the clocks in
their equipment based on a reference accepted worldwide.
NTP has deployed a hierarchical model of synchronization. There are stratum
1 time servers at the top - computers directly linked to high precision
devices known as "reference clocks" (or stratum 0). These devices can be
atomic clocks, Global Positioning Systems (GPS) receptors or radio
receptors. Whichever server extracts the time reference from a stratum 1
automatically becomes a stratum 2, and so on.
Time sync is crucial to millions of computers exchanging information:
individuals sharing database or processing transactions of various sorts,
such as electronic commerce and personal banking. It is precisely in this
open information-sharing environment that the need arises for a common,
precise and trustworthy time reference.

Supposing it is the last day to file Income Tax Returns, the clock at the
Internal Revenue website host is one minute fast and the deadline is 8 p.m.
Any returns filed after 7:59 p.m. will automatically be rejected, causing
grave problems for the tax payer. One- or two-minute delays are frequent
when an NTP system is not used. Another example that affects the end user is
the measure of time one is connected to the Internet access provider. A
provider that does not regularly check his server's clock might be tallying
the wrong hours and it could be tricky for the user to check his log time
with precision if the system he is using for the check is not synchronized
to the provider's.
>From the point of view of network administrators, the use of NTP is clearly
an advantage as it enables the automatic synchronization of all equipment
that is hooked up to the network, i.e. the administrator need not go from
one station to the next to set the local clocks right. With regard to
security, the synchronization of clocks between the various computers linked
up to the Internet is vital. It has often been the case that certain events
occurring in distant networks go undetected owing to the lack of
synchronization of computer clocks, which results in erroneous log time
registration.

The NTP stratum 1 server for RNP, available in ntp1.mp.br, uses GPS
technology that obtains time readings directly from a group of satellites.
There is unrestricted access to the server at this time. RNP is planning to
organize a stratum 2 hierarchy, starting with its Points of Presence, state
networks and other authorized networks, for the general use of the public.
This hierarchy is to distribute the processing load, thus yielding a more
stable and reliable service for the end user. More information is available

EchoStar VP to Speak on High-Bandwidth Two-Way Internet Over Satellite
Technology at Internet2 Member Meeting

Jim Stratigos, founder, vice president, and general manager of EchoStar
Data Networks, will speak to the Internet2 community about EchoStar's new
technology initiatives in high-bandwidth two-way Internet access over
satellite. His presentation will include the fall 2000 launch of Starband
(formerly Gilat-To-Home) and its industry-leading satellite return-path
technology.

EchoStar Data Networks developed from EchoStar Communication Corp.'s
acquisition in 1999 of Media4, the leading supplier of PC-based satellite
products under the direction of Mr. Stratigos. Mr. Stratigos now leads
the development of broadband Internet technology and services for
deployment to subscribers of EchoStar's Dish Network and is the co-author
of several books on VSAT technology and wireless multimedia networks.

Mr. Stratigos' presentation will be a part of the open ResearchChannel
Update Meeting at the Internet2 Member Meeting. The ResearchChannel
consortium of research universities and organizations uses EchoStar's 24x7
direct-broadcast satellite distribution system to reach over 4.3 million
EchoStar subscribers across the country.

***NLANR Solicits Input on Advanced Applications Database***

CHAMPAIGN, IL, October 17, 2000--Developers of the NLANR Advanced
Applications Database (AAD) are soliciting comments and suggestions about
the database from users. A Web-based survey was released today, Oct. 17,
and will be available online until the end of the year at
http://dast.nlanr.net/Clearinghouse/websurvey.htm.

The Advanced Applications Database is an online resource offering
information about projects, applications, and resources related to the use
of high-performance networks. The only known repository of information
about high-performance network applications, the AAD is a significant
resource for researchers and faculty seeking to identify useful networking
technologies, administrators looking for information on disciplinary and/or
applications-based networking communities, and support personnel tasked
with assisting users of high-speed networks. Entries in the AAD include
initiatives such as Internet2, a university/government/industry consortium
developing and deploying advanced network applications and technologies;
the Grid Forum, researchers and practitioners working together on
distributed computing technologies; Legion, an object-based metasystems
software project; and various collaborations enabled by the NSF-sponsored
Partnerships for Advanced Computational Infrastructure (PACI) program.

The survey was prepared by NLANR Senior Project Manager and Clearinghouse
Director George Brett and AAD Developer Ester Soriano. The pair
collaborated on AAD design and implementation and are seeking input to
increase the utility of the online resource. The survey asks about ways to
improve or enhance the data, the automated reports, and existing AAD features.

"It is important that we meet the needs of our clients and we solicit their
help in making that happen," said Brett. He added that maintaining the
existing records and adding to the collection are critical components of
making AAD a significant resource to researchers and administrators.

Brett has been working with other organizations that have data collections
to interest them in the AAD and to develop a standardized record structure.
Such standardization can assure that the AAD continues as a useful tool in
the future.

The National Laboratory for Applied Network Research is an NSF-supported
collaboration to provide technical, engineering and traffic analysis
support for NSF's High Performance Connections sites and the broad vBNS
user community. NLANR major activities are performed by three teams: a
distributed applications support team based at the University of Illinois'
National Center for Supercomputing Applications; a measurement and analysis
team based at the San Diego Supercomputer Center; and a networking
engineering support team based at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center. For
