Argentina and the United States to Collaborate on New Network Technologies
and Applications
November 22, 1999 Universal City, CA - Leaders of the advanced networking
efforts in the United States and Argentina today committed to work together
on advanced Internet technologies and applications for the research and
education community. The Memorandum of Understanding will provide a basis
for collaboration between advanced networking initiatives in the two
countries to develop capabilities increasingly required by scientists,
instructors and students, but which are not available in todays commodity
Internet.
"Today's Internet enables US researchers, teachers and students to
communicate and work with their colleagues around the globe. This agreement
between will enhance the potential for collaboration between the research
and education communities in the United States and Argentina, said Douglas
Van Houweling, President and CEO of the University Corporation for Advanced
Internet Development, which is leading the Internet2 initiative in the
United States.
"Telecommunications development in recent years has considerably changed the
development, application and use of several technological resources, which
have had an impact on several every-day life activities, especially in the
education and research fields, said Dr. Germán L. Kammerath, President of
the Fundación Internet2 Argentina, One of the main benefits of this
initiative is to create a sphere for scientific research, since it implies a
quantitative and qualitative leap in the field of technological development
and education."
As part of the agreement, the two organizations agree to:
· promote appropriate interconnection between and among their respective
members and networks for the purpose of development and pre-commercial
testing and use of advanced research and education applications;
· collaborate on the development of common standards and technical
implementations across their respective networks;
· promote collaboration between their constituent member organizations
and
institutions relating to the development of next-generation networking and
applications in research and higher education; and
· encourage technology transfer from their joint endeavors to
accelerate the
availability of new services and applications.
