LIVE HIGH BANDWIDTH NETCASTS FROM THE FALL 1999 INTERNET2 MEMBER MEETING

Live high bandwidth video of plenary sessions from the Internet2 Member
Meeting will be available over the Internet. Featured speakers include Jaron
Lanier, Chief Scientist, Advanced Network & Services; Larry Smarr, Director,
National Computational Science Alliance (NCSA); and Ruzena Bajcsy, Assistant
Director, Directorate for Computer & Information Science & Engineering,
National Science Foundation. A discussion of the recent Internet2
Sociotechnical Summit will highlight the closing plenary session. The
University of Washington is providing the technology and resources for the
netcasts.

The netcasts will push the limits of current Internet technology by
including video transmissions at 3 megabits per second--more than 50 times
the capacity of a typical modem. Video feeds at lower speeds will also be
available, including a feed for those using a dial-up link to the Internet.
All of the video feeds will be viewable using a freely available browser
plug-in.

FROM THE VIDEO DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE (VIDE)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Video Development Initiative (ViDe), a multi-institutional initiative
to promote the use of digital video in higher education, has selected
projects to participate in its Large Scale Video Network Prototype
(LSVNP), a distributed H.323 video conferencing testbed. Funded by the
Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA) and BBN, the
research arm of GTE, the LSVNP will establish a real-life testbed for
exploration of issues critical to the deployment of seamless networked
video. The goal of the LSVNP is to support the participating projects in
their use of video conferencing-over-IP, explore and resolve the ensuing
deployment issues, and thereby accelerate the adoption of H.323
technologies. BBN will be collaborating with ViDe to utilize the LSVNP to
conduct analysis of video traffic patterns.

A total of 14 regional and national projects will be supported with
gatekeeping and multipoint services during Phase I (Jan. 1 - Dec. 31,
2000). Comprising over 60 institutions, the projects were selected
from responses to an RFP released by ViDe in August '99. They include
applications in marine sciences, veterinary medicine, speech pathology and
audiology, training for k12 teachers, architecture, higher education
outreach and technical assistance in deafness, emergency telemedicine, and
earthquake research.

The LSVNP testbed will represent the first large-scale distributed video
conferencing network. The LSVNP host sites are the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill, NYSERNet (New York State, Educational and
Research Network), The Georgia Institute of Technology, and The University
of Tennessee, Knoxville.

For more information contact Ed Price, ViDe Administrative Chair at
.
More information on ViDe is available at

In support of the NetAid Concert and on-going tests of multicast
broadcasting Cisco Systems is making the IP/TV client available
to all I2 schools at no cost for 1 year - see below for details:

This is an informational announcement about
an upcoming multicast event, NetAid, which is in
part a global concert scheduled for Saturday, Oct 9th,
that will be multicast on the MBONE and also available
through RealVideo distributions.

The primary website for NetAid is:

http://www.netaid.org/

The scheduled times for live concert activity are (Pacific Time):

Saturday, October 9th, London, Geneva, and New York.
LONDON-WEMBLEY STADIUM Pacific Time: 9:00am-2:30pm
GENEVA-PALAIS DES NATIONS Pacific Time: 1:00pm-2:30pm
NEW JERSEY-GIANT'S STADIUM Pacific Time: 2:00pm-8:00pm

Internet2 sites may find this information useful.
A press release about the multicast component can be found here:

http://www.netaid.org/press/iptv.htm

There are a few methods for viewing the concert.
Some of these are described at the URL mentioned above.
The concert "channels" will be sent at various bandwidths and formats.
A higher bandwidth MPEG1 stream will be viewable on PC's with Cisco IP/TV,
or on Unix machines with related multicast MBONE tools.

If your LAN connection is not high-bandwidth ( > 1.5Mega-bits-per-second ),
you should not attempt to view the MPEG1 stream. The stream will show up
in multicast listings as "Netaid MPEG1" or similar.

The other format for the concert will be H.261 streams that are viewable
with the RealVideo viewers common on most personal computers, ( in addition
to some of the other MBONE tools already mentioned. ) These streams will
be made available at a number of lower speeds for viewing on slower LANS.
Information on these streams can be found here:

http://realguide.real.com/category.rxml?category_uid=136&scpage=netaid

University of Oregon users or Internet2 connected sites can
find information about software for viewing multicast here:

http://netaid.uoregon.edu/

Users are encouraged to install early and test their connections
on the current test channels prior to the actual event on Saturday.
A mailing list to support those users who are Internet2 and who
are installing the IP/TV client and trying to view the NetAid
feeds has been setup at:

mailto:
subscribe i2iptv-support

The list is available in archive form here.

http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~llynch/i2iptv/

One University of Oregon specific note -- UO students and staff who have
received the "Duckware '99" CD-ROM can install Cisco IP/TV directly
from the CD-ROM.

We at the University of Oregon hope that we are able to do our part
in making this a successful venture. Hopefully the above information
will be useful in helping more people become aware of the goals of NetAid.
