Dear Colleagues,

After socializing with colleagues and friends at the 2014 Internet2 Global Summit Welcome Reception Monday evening—held at the spectacular Denver Art Museum—you’ll want to rest up, because Tuesday’s Executive Track program starts with a bang at 8:00 a.m.! Here are the details.

Tuesday, April 8

The Challenge: Balancing Innovation and Stability (8:00a, Plaza F)

We’re hearing loud and clear from many of you that Internet2 has an important role to play in developing and offering infrastructure and identity and trust services attuned to the needs of R&E. Others feel such endeavors lie outside the scope of Internet2’s responsibilities or capabilities. What are your thoughts? Community leaders host this discussion on how to balance innovation and financial/operational stability. How can we ensure that the entire ecosystem—from researcher, to campus, to regional, to Internet2, to global infrastructure—meets the challenge? How can we equip our staff to meet the challenges as opportunities rather than threats? We need your input!

General Session: Future of the University
(10:30a, Plaza Ballroom A/B/C)

The Honorable Shirley Ann Jackson, theoretical physicist and 18th President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, anchors the second of our general sessions. After her address, a distinguished panel of university leaders will discuss research, education and technological entrepreneurship as major drivers of science and technology transfer, invention, and innovation—from discovery to impact in the global marketplace.

Accelerating Global Collaboration to Address Common Challenges (11:45a, Plaza F)

The R&E networking community is rich in innovative ideas. But sometimes these ideas can be slow to offer optimal value at a global scale. In 2012, 14 CEOs from National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) around the globe joined together to address this important challenge and created the Global NREN CEO Forum. Join us for a ”working“ lunch as Tracy Futhey, Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer at Duke, will lead a panel of CEOs as they present an overview of this Forum, its goals, its working groups, and the status of its efforts to date.

TIER Is Here (1:15p, Plaza F)

The time has passed where institutions can continue to address identity management challenges by deploying an alphabet soup of disparate, disconnected, open source components or incomplete and expensive commercial identity management services. Trust and Identity have gone global, with over 7.5 million accounts now federated via Internet2’s InCommon. Our foundational work in this area must now move to a new phase to support the fundamental changes happening across the higher education community. How should the Internet2 community move beyond status quo and address the exploding demand?

Melissa Woo, Vice Provost for Information Services and Chief Information Officer at University of Oregon, will provide an overview of the expanded role of the TIER (Trusted Identity in Education and Research) Program Advisory Group and facilitate the session, joined by Steve Zoppi, Associate VP for Service Integration and Architecture, and Internet2 member CIOs Eric Denna (University of Utah) and Kelli Trosvig (University of Washington), fresh from a community CIO discussion about proposed solutions.

Got MFA? (2:00p, Plaza F)

Beyond the evolution of the base identity ecosystem addressed in the 1:15 session, we have an immediate need to expand "Trust" to enhance security, particularly to fight targeted phishing attacks. CIO Kevin Mooroney (Penn State University) will kick off a conversation on new modes of multifactor authentication (MFA) by sharing experiences from his institution’s most recent large-scale deployment.

Break (2:30p, Plaza F)

Can Security Be a Service? (3:00p, Plaza F)

We reconvene to talk about the expanding role of security: beyond individual privacy to security as a service, and securing campus infrastructure in a world where that infrastructure no longer stops at the campus border. Join Rodney Peterson from EDUCAUSE, who will facilitate a discussion about the new Research and Education Community Security Collaborative, and Brian Voss, Retired CIO from Maryland, who will discuss his recent experiences and learning related to modern cyber attacks.

Internet2 NET+ Service Provider Panel and Discussion (3:45p, Plaza F)

We close our Executive Track program by asking: Why does NET+ make sense for campuses and providers? How is business “in the cloud” different than past models from the provider’s perspective? How can higher education community and provider make partnerships truly a win-win situation?

Shel Waggener, Internet2 Senior Vice President, moderates a panel of three NET+ provider senior executives, including Jeff MacMillian, CEO of KeyNexus, Tom Gonser, Founder and Chief Strategy Officer of DocuSign, and Ritesh Bansal, CTO of Fuzebox in an interactive exchange to help you find real answers to your questions.

Closing Remarks (5:00p, Plaza F)
