Hey,
Vivek has been working on this workflow enhancement for access requests for a while now, and it is released in patches: grouper_v2_4_0_api_patch_70, grouper_v2_4_0_ui_patch_42.

This is not intended to be a fully featured workflow system. You can integrated one of those if you need parallel branches and other features.
If you want a simple workflow and approval process, and simple form, then this might work for you.
Configure a form for a user to fill out. Configure a simple workflow with node approved by various groups. Have simple validations on the form. At each node in the workflow, a snapshot of the form and audit history will be saved.
This is experimental this point, but we are looking forward to having people kick the tires and let us know what you think. Or maybe a wiki contrib about a use case and how this solved it.
